.jpeg, .zip, .pdf, .one...wait, what?

I filed my taxes electronically last week from my laptop at home. I am due to get some money back, which I am kind of excited about, and to finish the final step of my tax filing (which is an important part of getting of said money) I must print the signature page and mail it in. I don’t have a printer at home, but that is no problem! I just emailed the document to myself to print at work! Well, apparently my copy of Vista or Adobe Acrobat or whatever the hell system the document was saved under (I swear I thought it was saving as a .pdf file) saved it as a .one file instead. My work system doesn’t recognize the .one file at all and refuses to let me open it, which is hindering my printing attempts.

Is there any way to transfer the .one file to another .something that is a bit more common while I am here at work? I can always resave it to a different .whatever when I get home but if possible I would like to get this finished today.

Did you try renaming the file from whatever.one to whatever.pdf?

Actually, make a copy of the file (“Copy of whatever.one”) and change THAT to “Copy of whatever.pdf”

There’s a large number of file extension references out there, but I will admit I had to poke a couple before I found that, err, one.

filext.com has several candidates:

The most likely sounding one is Microsoft OneNote.

Check out the File Extension site for more info. You make have to do it all over again.

When you have OneNote installed on your computer, “Send to OneNote” becomes an option as a printer when you go to print something. So you probably have entries for Your Real Paper Printer, Adobe PDF and Send to OneNote (among others) when you bring up a print dialog. You probably chose the wrong one, which happens sometimes. Or, you have accidentally set “Send to OneNote” as your default printer.

I’d offer to take your .one file and try to open it here and convert to PDF for you…but I’m not sure how much personal information might be on the file. It’s probably something you’ll have to work out for yourself :frowning:

I appreciate the offer, ZipperJJ, but it is my tax return so it is all sorts of personal. I will just go home and resave it under a .pdf file and print it tomorrow. I have tried renaming it but my computer still rejects it. :frowning:

This freeware program, PrimoPDF , will convert onenote files to pdf.

Some good news here if you are in a hurry to receive your refund – in some cases, your refund is processed independently of the receipt of your documents by snail mail. Each of the last two years, after electronic filing, my return was direct-deposited before I mailed the forms in to the IRS.

are you sure? I think primo just captures a print stream and converts it to pdf. hence one needs onenote to open and print the original file in the first place

Well, last night I converted the file to a word document but then my home internet connection crapped out so I couldn’t forward it to myself for printing. I will try again tonight and hope that it will go through this time. I think there are forces in the universe working against my attempts to cooperate with the IRS.
