JSB5048, A Word Please ...

Not very well, apparently!!
Serious answer: Use any “go to the last post” button to get the formula, which will look something like http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=2577232#post2577232 (the actual link to where I said I’d Pit the next guy to refer to Jolly Old St. Nick as “Santa Clause”).

Hover over the “edit” or “quote” button in the post you want to link to, to get the postid number of that post. Substitute it in in both places in the link in the last paragraph (the first one says “open the thread that contains post no. 2577232,” and the second says “and when you do, skip down to post no. 2577232”). [It’s possible to write a link with a threadid number in the first spot, but a pain to do (and won’t work right on multipage threads anyway).]

Yeah, it was Dunder, but they changed what they called him after the infamous venison dinner he served back in the mid 1800s!

Wow, when I saw Poly had pitted somebody, I was scared to open the thread.

I thought he had had a psychotic break, finally snapped, and was going to cuss bigtime and flame the hell out of the pitee. I am relieved. (Although in a morbid sort of way I was looking forward to it.)

Of course I do know darn well that Poly could flame the hell out of somebody without using even a “dangit” or “heck” if he chose to.

Donder? What kind of reindeer name is Donder? --D. Barry aka Mr. Language Person

Well enough,2trew. However, take yerself to wherever he is these days and pick your bone with Ogden Nash.

Thanks Polycarp.

Oh, one helpful hint – if you do the hover thing to find out the post number, and your computer’s cookies act like mine do so that the post identity consists of http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forums.php?this&postid=1234567#post1234567, so that it gets cut off on the bottom-of-the-browser display line a few characters after the s= bit, instead of displaying the best move is to click on [ quote ], note down the postid number, and use the back button to stop the quoting process. Then you have the postid number to substitute in.

[Intentionally reposted because I forgot to turn off "automatically parse URLs so that the coding problem would in fact show. Would a Mod. kindly delete the first version, with the link embedded in it?]

Well, that didn’t do it either – in some browsers’ mode of tracking cookies, including mine, there’s a string of about 30 numbers preceded by s= between the question mark and the &postid= part of the link. Apparently the post-parsing software eliminates that stuff automatically, no matter whether you have “automatically parse URLS” on or off. In any case, it makes the read-the-link display at the bottom of the browser too long to read the postid number, and that’s the workaround for it.

It’s not my favoritage thingage when peopleage make up new wordage by adding -age onto nounages.

Gotta stick up for the guy I pitted, Duke:

Definitions 1a and 2 do seem to fit what he was saying.

Good nitpickage, though!

The German for “thunder” is “Donner”. Cite. Just felt I had to say that.

‘Donner und Blitzen! Ze Allies have broken through our outer pear-imeter……’

  • from any 1970’s comic you care to recall, okay not The Dandy.

You must have read a better class of comics than me … all the Germans ever said in mine were “Achtung!” and “Hande (sic) hoch!”
