It seems the video game is still well under way, and the screenshots I can find show that it’s nearly finished. It doesn’t look kneecapped at all to me.
It’s been “nearly finished” for a while now, and from what I hear, the circumstances of its not being released are due to some backroom negotiating with the property holder more than not having an immediate publisher.
Ghostbusters The Game (effectively Ghostbusters III plotwise). was originally in development for Vivendi Games with a release date of Fall 2008. Vivendi Games was bought out by Activision and Activision decided to stop funding the game and the rights reverted to Paramount. Paramount partnered with Atari (development was still ongoing by the independant development team the entire time) and the game was given a TBA 2009 release date. A few weeks later, the game was announced to be coming out in June 2009 to coincide with the movie’s 25th anniversary.
At no time was there any “backroom negotiating” and the game was never in any danger of cancellation (because it was… wait for it… nearly finished).
The best part, the game is officially Ghostbusters III because it is being written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis.
Jeez. Sorry, I wince inwardly every time I see Dan Aykroyd’s name spelled like that. I know, if that’s the smallest thing in my life I have to nitpick, and all. And no, I’m not related to him. And I do try to keep it to myself most of the time.
But still, he’s been famous for what, almost 35 years now?
No offense taken. In my defense, what has Dan Aykroyd done lately? The last thing I remember seeing him in was Evolution and that was like a decade ago.
You’re right, I suppose. Aside from a couple of guest appearances on “According To Jim,” he’s mainly relegated to supporting roles, such as in 50 First Dates and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. He just doesn’t have the marquee name anymore that will attract ticket buyers.
