Ghostbusters: The Video Game finally gets a release date

Well, at least a release month. June, 2009.

Here’s the latest trailer.

Damn. That looks…good.

Who’s the fifth guy supposed to be, though? You, The Player? It doesn’t look like Tully.

Yeah, the 5th guy is the player. You play as a new recruit.

Oh man, I had no idea that was in development. I am totally psyched - it looks great! (And I’m doubly glad it’s on the Wii so I can play it).

Sounds like they got the actual actors, too. If not, they’re very good imitators.

I’m all about this game.

Yep all original actors except Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis (I think). Takes place in 1991. Ackroyd and Ramis say they consider the game to be Ghostbusters 3. Like I said, the player is the FNG, and your job is to test all of Egon’s new proton packs… for better or worse

on top of that it’s being WRITTEN by the original guys, too (Ackroyd and Ramis) so not just acted out. So yea, basically the closest thing to a GhostBusters 3 we’ll ever get (plus those guys are all old now, a real ghostbusters 3 movie would be kinda disappointing, this way we can all pretend they haven’t aged in the past 20 years  )

Want! I used to play the NES game constantly, even though it was terrible just because it was Ghostbusters. Now I can finally scratch that itch without resorting to driving around picking up fuel barrels.

NES! Ha! I go really old school. Used to play a Ghostbusters game on my C64.

oh yea?! Well me and my brother used to “cross streams” when we were little kids

Exactly. This looks like a brilliant move on Ackroyd’s part (I knew he was the creative force behind the game, but I hadn’t been keeping up with news on it). I’m thrilled that the original actors came back.

Even if the gameplay turns out to be nothing spectacular (although come on, a Proton Pack with the Wiimote? That’s as good as a lightsaber :D), the story should be downright awesome.

I loved Ghostbusters on the Sega Genesis! Fond memories…

I tried to play that game on an Apple IIe. Never did work right.

You should really like this then.

Yeah, I had the Atari 2600 version.

First I was “What? Eww”, then I looked at the screenshots, and read the article, and realized Ghostbusters is the perfect vehicle for a modern game. I’m psyched!

The movies themselves hold up amazingly well, too. I watched them a week or two ago and they’re just as entertaining (if perhaps not as funny as remembered) as they ever were, without seeming dated. If there was any 80s/early 90s franchise to revive, this is it.

honestly the wii doesn’t do it for me, couple good games but most of the stuff with the wiimote just seems gimicky. I’ll be getting the x360 version.

It was mostly written and voice acted back during the writer’s strike. Something to do to keep the hand in.

The Activision Ghostbusters game for NES, C64, 2600, and a bunch of other systems, developed by David Crane, was pretty much the same, give or take graphical limitations given the system it was on- you have a new Ghostbusters franchise and drive around the city busting ghosts.

As for this game, if the trailer is any indication, this looks like a really good game. (The game was originally supposed to be released around Halloween this year- Doritos had a tie in where they brought two of their flavors- Taco and Four Cheese- “back from the dead” for a limited time.) With this video game and Time-Life’s new complete collection of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon on DVD (which is, from what I hear, stupendous, much like all of Time-Life’s releases), the Ghostbusters seem to be back in the game for 2009 (their 25th anniversary). I guess bustin’ does make you feel good!

Apparently, the game will be an open-ended, GTA-style adventure where you travel around NYC helping the Ghostbusters bust ghosts. All versions of the game will follow the same basic storyline (and have the same comedic style as the films), but the PS3 and 360 versions of the game will have more realistic graphics and probably a T rating, whereas the PS2 and Wii versions will have more cartoon-like graphics and probably an E10 rating.

According to marketing, the Ghostbusters logo is the second-most-recognized in the world after Coca-Cola, so the franchise is still known worldwide.
