I’m afraid I didn’t really dig on Tron 2.0 much, so having a chance to play in a beloved movie franchise doesn’t turn out to be magical. If it were an RPG, I’d just go ahead and buy Ghostbusters anyway. But as an fps, I’d like to hear some reports before I go blow any money on the thing.
Anybody got it, or have been keeping up with the buzz better than I have? Tell!
Yeah. When I heard about the game originally - I thought first day purchase. But, I haven’t heard anything further to convince me of that. The reviews make it sound good, but not GREAT. Which means I feel like I am better off waiting til the price comes down a tad when it isn’t brand new. I’ll check out that ars technica review now. That site is usually pretty reliable.
I think the guys from 1UP.com on their Listen UP podcast last week were saying they’d go Wii over the PS3/360/PC options, even with the use of cartoony graphics on the Wii vs more realistic ones in the other platform versions. Here’s a 360 vs Wii video comparison from them which might be more useful for you. (I’m torn on PS3 vs Wii, myself, leaning Wii.)
Yeah. I don’t know what they are thinking with the PS3 version. The two machines are even as far as technology, the graphics should be very very similar. The screenshots I have been show show the textures to be better a higher resolution. Just in general a better looking game. It’s the first game I have see this on. Every other head to head comparison I have been show has seemed to be pretty equal.
Why would you get both versions if the game play of both is the same. The only difference being the graphics?
If you’re talking 360 vs Wii, it’s not just the graphics. Using the Wiimote is a different experience from using the 360 controller, and the Wii has co-op story mode.
If you’re talking 360 vs PS3, then I don’t know why anyone would get both.
I’ve played both and prefer the 360/PS3 version to th Wii one…and that’s not because of the graphics. The Wii version has been greatly simplified, with the “slamming” mechanic largely becoming an interactive cutscene, and there’s no “capture” process once you’ve gotten the ghost within the trap’s range. In the 360 version, you really have to fight those buggers, slamming them around at will to weaken them, then you have to fight to keep them within the trap’s range for capture. It’s more dynamic and interesting.
I do like how you actually “throw” the trap in the Wii version with the actual gesture, but the gameplay itself isn’t as strong.
As for the game itself, I really like the ghost-hunting aspects, but everything else is pretty ho-hum. The level design is borderline terrible, and most of the mechanics aside from capturing ghosts aren’t very good (there’s a noticeable delay when dodging, and your other “weapons” that aren’t the standard Blast Stream are really lame, and make it feel like a generic shooter. And ironically, there isn’t nearly enough ghost-capturing–instead you’re often fighting lame enemies like statues that come to life, which can’t be captured (which is the game’s best mechanic).
However, it is pretty badass when you and your teammates are all fighting to trap the same ghost–that aspect really captures the spirit of the films well.
I was looking at both the PC and Wii versions today.
I will certainly buy the Wii version - my wife likes Ghostbusters and has just finished Sonic Unleashed, so she’s due for a new game.
I may actually buy the PC version, too. Both versions were priced ~$30.00 CDN, which is quite reasonable for a project like this with so many licensing issues.
I’ve been playing the Wii version and just wrapped up the library. The controls are extremely smooth but the game is definitely too simple. There’s not enough to hunting down and capturing ghosts. It also looks like it will be extremely short; I’ve got about two and half hours of game play into it and I’m nearly half way done.
I still haven’t done co-op mode and I suspect that will pick things up a bit. So far it’s looking like an enjoyable romp, just not spectacular. $40 was a bit too much to pay for it; it’s more like a $25 game…
My choice was PS3 or PC… In case you’re a PC person and haven’t heard the news, the PC version has no online or multiplayer capability. Zip. Zero. Nada. Of course it only costs $30 and if you have no plans to play coop with friends it’s no big deal. But I was really looking forward to nuking the spooks with my buddies.
So I went PS3. Graphics are so-so (and noticeably inferior to the 360, for whatever reason). Level design sucks. Enemy AI is a little lacking. Some of the voice acting (I’m looking at you, Bill Murray) is pretty bad for professionals… But the game is still fun. I haven’t really gotten into the MP aspect of it but I’m thinking I’ll enjoy it.
One perk for PS3 owners: ordinarily sixaxis controls are a gimmick, but in this game it works. I turned on the motion control “ghost wrangling” feature and it works surprisingly well and really adds a level of immersion into the game as you smack the ghost around and drag it to the trap. I’d recommend giving it a shot.
But is it worth $60? I’m borderline on whether or not I should have rented it first.
All I have is a PC, and I was bummed about the no multiplayer. But I didn’t know it was only $30, thanks for letting me know. I may actually get it now…
Here’s another review, I don’t think it’s been linked to yet: 1UP
I actually own a PS3 but prefer to play games on my PC. Out of principle, because they allowed PC gaming mags to hype the game before revealing it would be an PS3 exclusive, I refuse to buy it. I guess I could buy it second-hand…
As an aside. I imported ‘MLB 09: The Show’ because it’s not available over here. It cost me ~$80.
