She’s sharp, aggressive, cutting, mature, confident, responsible, and truly funny. I just finished watching The People’s Court, and as always, I am totally entranced. Now that is a lady! Wooooh boy.
I’m trying to find someone to sue just so I can get on the show and interact with her. Any takers?
Well, at least she’s not a harpy like Judge Judy.
But they do share the same sense of “screw the law and what’s relevant and admissible, I want to hear some dirt!”
Remember Judge Wapner? He would describe the law and do everything accordingly. When somebody tried to say “Her girlfriends came over to smoke pot all the time” he would instantly and calmly say “That doesn’t change the fact that you smashed her car.” But the “lady” judges just ask for more and more dirt to milk the tension. And they put up with a lot of cross talk and interruptions that would never get into a real courtroom.
Welcome to the Straight Dope, Can I Change My Answer?. But I’ll have to disagree with you about Judge Judy. She keeps a pretty tight rein and won’t allow any hearsay or crosstalk.
Judge Marilyn Milian is a lot warmer and seems to draw people out a little more. I am really surprised that she would let herself be described as “the hottest judge on television” – even if she is. Maybe it’s a cultural thing.
Oh, man, this was amazing… I’ll try to get it right.
Guy was selling a motor bike of some sort in the US. Some guy in NIGERIA (imagine that!?!?) wanted to buy it for 400. BUT, he was going to give the seller a check for 2,200. The extra $1,800 was so the can then send a check for $1,800 to the “shipper”.
Somewhere along the line, the seller (Defendant, believe it or not ) borrowed the money to do this from his step mother (forevermore known as Plaintiff), and after the shipper didn’t show up for the bike but the money was gone, stepmother wanted HER money back.
Hopefully someone can fill in the stuff I’ve gotten wrong, but those are the basics.
Just shows to go ya, truth is indeed stranger than fiction
This is an accurate description of the case - the stepmother loaned him the $1,800 before the check cleared ('cause apparently this guy had to have his bike in Nigeria right away), and then of course the check turned out to be phony.
Ruling was for the plaintiff. Judge Milian absolutely had a heydey with the kid, she was going ballistic on the fact that he actually fell for the scam.
