When I was about 3 or 4 years old, I was riding on a fishing boat with my father in California, looking over the edge at the rotor churning the water below, thinking that I could easily leap into the water and just die if I wanted. There was an impulse to do so. It was a very real possibility, nobody could have stopped me. This is among my earliest memories.
