Junior Bonner

Watching Junior Bonner on TMC. Dear Lord, that’s Ida Lupino!

TMC or TCM? Fantastic film.

I haven’t seen that movie in literally decades. And yes, Elvira was played by Ida Lupino.

Turner Classic Movies. I make that typo a lot.

A great film.

Junior Bonner! Old times man. I got to see some of that movie filmed. We were visiting family in Prescott, Arizona and they had all the sound and equipment trucks parked around the town square. This is the same town square that appeared in the movie Billy Jack. Also filmed in and around Prescott, though it’s been so long since I’ve seen it I don’t remember if the town square appeared in it, was Bless the Beasts and Children (also partly filmed in Jerome). A lot of movies have been filmed in and around there.

Anyway, my cousins and I walked to the town square and spent hours walking around, looking at all the trucks and equipment and lights and people working, and got to see something filmed. I don’t know what, to us it just seemed like some people walking down the street. After I saw the film, when I thought about it later, I bet we just missed being there, either too early or too late, to see Steve McQueen coming out of the bar, getting in his car and driving away. Maybe, I don’t know. I sure wanted to see Steve McQueen, because he was my favorite actor at the time (since I’d seen Bullitt), but even though I didn’t get to see him I always had that little special place in my heart for JB, just because I Was There. Kinda. It’s a fan thing.

On another visit to Prescott, we went into the bar that was featured in the film. It’s a very cool bar.

Nice to hear others think it’s a good movie too. I haven’t seen it for ages. I should watch it again.

Trivia: Prescott is pronounced Press-cut. If you say Press-cot the locals will laugh at you.

Trivia2: One of the most magnificent, stunning, awe-inspiring, humbling and memorable drives in the United States is between Flagstaff, AZ and Prescott, on A89 (that Wikipedia page talks about the journey from Prescott to Flagstaff, but I’ve only been on it from Flagstaff to Prescott). It’s 87 miles of some of the most spectacular, eclectic scenery in the US. Forests, mountains, deserts, red rock country, winding roads, and more. My favorite part is Jerome, an old copper mining town built on the side of Mingus Mountain. The “Children” in Bless the Beasts And got into their big fight in the bar in Jerome (entrance seen at the left in this photo behind the guy in the red shirt, it’s the Connor Hotel). Those mountains in the distance are the San Francisco Peaks, north of Flagstaff. They were named well before the city of SFO was established.

Needless to say, I used to LOVE visiting my cousins.

I LOVE Junior Bonner. I wonder if TCM’s version had the original music. I have the movie on both VHS and DVD, because the VHS version has all the original songs, but the rights couldn’t be secured for the DVD release.
