Jurisdiction of Pontius Pilate and Herod

In the movie the Passion, Pontius Pilate, upon hearing that Jesus is from Nazareth determines that Jesus is under Herod’s jurisdiction, and sends the case over to Herod.

Can anyone give me the relevant background on this? What exactly was the relationship between Pontius Pilate’s jurisdiction and Herod’s jurisdiction?

Herod Antipas was the tetrarch of Galilee, sometimes colloquially called a king in Scripture.

Pilate was the Roman prefect (procurator) of Judea.

Pilate wanted to get the Jesus issue off his hands. Since Jesus was from Galilee, Pilate sent him to Herod, who happened to be in Jerusalem at the time. (Luke 23:1-12).
