Just another baby thread... Babyproofing!!!

I just saw these tot locks for cabinets and was wondering if anyone has tried them? If so, how well do they work? I’ve tried the latch type locks and was NOT impressed.
I’ve had three kids now and have never really “babyproofed” but after my second child getting into toilet bowl cleaner last year I made up my mind to start. He’s been at his dads house in another state since DH and I moved so we haven’t babyproofed ANYTHING here. Well…… Yesterday the baby started crawling and got into EVERYTHING. Any tips for babyproofing?
Just a tip for those of you with window blinds heres a link for free cord safety equiptment to keep your little ones from getting tangled in the cords.

I was always afraid to trust any babyproofing device, so I just rearranged everything. I stored all cleaning supplies, sharp things or valuable things way, way up high. In the lower areas of the house I put cereal, crackers and toys. I even got rid of some furnature that had sharp corners on them. My house looked funny, but at least I felt better.

Very smart move. Babies are astonishingly clever at being able to get into whatever we want to keep out of their reach.

I would suggest that you may want to change the kinds of cleaners that you use in order to cut down the risk. For example, instead of a 409-type counter cleaner, mix up your own vinegar-and-water solution to use for every day tasks. That way, if it’s accidently left in a cabinet the baby can get into, there’s less chance of poisoning. Keep what “real” cleaning solutions you need in a high cabinet. (Plus there’s less risk of baby getting dangerous residue on his hands.)

Make sure you get those little plugs that fill electrical outlets, so a curious baby san’t stick anything into them.

My aunt and uncle were coming for a visit, with several very small kids, so we spent a lot of time babyproofing the house. They still got in somehow…

<rimshot> Don’t forget to tip your waitress!

Those tot loks are great for specific purposes… We’ve used them for a lot of cabinets that wouldn’t accept some of the other kinds of locking devices. They are a little awkward if it is a cabinet you need to use often though.

Those are some powerful magnets so be wary of what’s being locked

I also like some of the other style locks like the one that looks like a butterfly (can’t find a picture grrr)

We have locks on our bifold closet doors and some great electrical covers that snap closed if baby pulls out a plug. And gates abound.

Yeah I know kids can get in a lot of stuff… mine’s pretty precocious when it comes to stuff I don’t want her into… the childproofing mostly buys us time to stop her.

Going all around your house childproofing things seems a bit like putting the King before the pawn… Instead, try locking the baby to something safe in a known location. Way less effort, and only requires one lock.

lol tried that… the only problem is when they learn to pick the locks.

I used those covers for electrical sockets and made sure all the miniblind cords were way up high… other than that I never really babyproofed. Cleaning supplies and medications have always been kept up high, knives and scissors are put away, and I only keep towels in the cabinet below the bathroom sink. I used baby gates to keep them out of rooms I didn’t want them in or just kept doors closed. If they started messing with something they weren’t supposed to mess with I just told them no and redirected them towards something else.

I don’t know if this is considered babyproofing/childproofing or not but now that my kids are older (6 and 4) they know how to unlock the front and back doors so I have chain locks installed way up high on the door so they can’t go outside without my knowing it. I put the chain locks on because my son woke up early one Saturday morning (a few weeks ago) and went outside while I was still asleep!! Scared the crap out of me because he’s only 4 and I didn’t want him being outside alone and wonderfing off or something.

I also bolted down the kids dressers, book cases, and the stove because I’ve read many stories about kids having these things tipped over on them and killing them. Nothing wrong with securing these heavy items to the wall to prevent this.

Child proof cabinet locks are a pain in the ass IMO. Kids can open them better than adults sometimes! I also know that kids have been known to drown in toilets and that’s why there are toilet locks available but I think those are a waste of time too.

yup we have the stuff strapped to the walls too Kiki… makes me feel a little better when the munchkin is trying to climb a bookcase… gives me a few extra seconds to retrieve her.

My 2 year old escaped the house one day so we too have chain locks up high on all the doors.

They are wiley and you need to pee sometimes and since locking her in the bathroom with you doesn’t work when she can do doorknobs… you gate and lock and pray
