Have you seen the eToys commercial where the father (I think) orders the little firefly lantern for his kid? That was such a cute commercial. My mom wanted actually wanted to get one of those lanterns, even though we don’t have fireflies here. (The music in the background, btw, is by a late Hawaii singer. It’s a very moving remake of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”)

Well, we keep a sort of plastic cover on it. It gets a little mushy in the summer heat, but that just makes it comfy…ewwww!

Fireflies are really cute, they will land on your hand and crawl around a bit, lighting up, and then fly off. Sometimes, the whole field behind my house is flickering on and off; it’s really neat.

A fieldful of fireflies! I’d love to see that. Heck, we don’t have cool bugs here. I found a red and black spotted ladybug once, and it was exciting for me. First one I’d ever seen. Usually, you can only find those iridescent black ones.

Iridescent black ladybugs?! That’s cool. I don’t know how wide the fireflies’ range is, but I never see them up at Bard-land (though I’m usually there the wrong time of year). Maryland is usually pretty thick with them; they may be plentiful further south, too…just a WAG.

Oh, the frilled paper cup thingies! Now that’s spoiling me! Usually a Hershey’s Kiss in silver foil does me fine.
The next time my prof goes south to visit, I’ll ask him to catch me fireflies. Imagine, a 65-year old man who’s had hip and cataract surgery running around in a field at night with a mayonnaise jar, scooping fireflies… On second thought, I shouldn’t ask him.

The funny part is, my prof is probably the type to do that, bad hip or not. He would, and he’d be grinning and laughing madly the whole time. (And don’t worry, he’s here in Hawaii. I just saw him yesterday.)
I used to play tennis with my dad too, just for fun, when I was a kid. Problem was, I burned really easily in the sun. There aren’t many tennis courts near my house that aren’t in full sun, so I stopped playing. I don’t even have my racket anymore.
