just bought some dates.... whats this thing?

was at my local ethnic market and saw they just got in a shipment of fresh pitted dates. in the packaging there was a long plastic stick looking thingy… whats it for? toothpick maybe? or for scraping out the insides of the date? any ideas?

It’s supposed to be a fork for picking them up and eating them without getting your fingers sticky. It’s usually styled in the form of the stalk that the dates grew on (no idea why).

(IMO) It’s not a brilliant idea because:
-Having been stored in with the dates, it will already be sticky, so it won’t save your fingers
-You only get one of them, but more than one person may share the box of dates

that was my first thought… but it seemed a bit ungainly for that… too long and awkward. wound up using it as a toothpick anyways, but it left me curious.
