I rented a car for a week. Picked it up in the middle of the night after flying for about a day. I told the rental agent I didn’t want any insurance extras, just the car. He said fine, just sign here, initial here, which I did.
A week later I returned the car and found out I was charged $7/day for some insurance I didn’t want, but the jerk snuck it past me since I was in no condition to read carefully at that time of night.
Other than reviewing what you signed to be sure that is what you were charged, nothing.
You could complain to a manager or customer service representative and they could choose to remove the charges. This would be their option. They may give you some sort of deal or coupon for use on your next rental.
I’d try writing to the manager or owner if it is a franchise. I used to manage a car rental office and I doubt they will refund the amount if you signed the agreement. The manager will probably say you are responsible for reading the agreement before you sign it. Managers get alot of complaints about charges after the fact, mostly from people who didn’t actually read the contract. Maybe the manager will be willing to adjust it to keep your business, especially if you rent regularly at that location, so it’s worth asking.
Could it have been a simple clerical error rather than the jerk sneaking it past you?
Do you still have your copy of the original contract?
Why did you have to initial if not to decline the CDW? (I’m assuming they charged you for the Collision Damage Waiver).
Does the original contract have an estimate of the rental amount? Is the “insurance” included in this amount?
