Just how many songs are about, involve or mention Superman?

I was listening to the radio today and heard the song about Pocket full of Kryptonite (I forgetthe artists and song’s name, followed later in the day by walking by a store that had the Kinks ‘Superman’ playing on its stereo.

It occoured to me that there are a lot of songs about Superman, mention Superman, or involve him somehow.

OK, I know a few off the top of my head, but they often have some other name. Can we get a difinitive list?

Also by the Spin Doctors - Jimmy Olsen’s Blues
R.E.M - Superman (though it’s a The Clique cover)
Crash Test Dummies - Superman’s Song
Five for Fighting -Superman (It’s Not Easy)
Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Resignation Superman

This thread as already been done. I’m just too lazy to look it up.

As long as I’m here…

Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down

Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers

Eminem - Superman
Laurie Anderson - O Superman

Songs that mention Superman:
Roland Gift - Superhero
Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out for a Hero
Billy Idol - White Wedding (“hey little sister, who’s your Superman?”)
that new song that repeats the words “crank that soulja boy” - not sure if that’s the title

There was also a Bad Religion song my brother used to listen to all the time when he was 14 whose title escapes me at the moment, but I recall these lyrics:

Do what you must
Break all the fucking rules
And go to hell with Superman
And die like a champion
Yeah hey!

Our Lady Peace - Superman’s Dead
Peter Gabriel - Have A Wonderful Day In A One Way World
Donovan - Sunshine Superman
Almost:
XTC - That’s Really Super, Supergirl

A couple easy ones:
“Waitin’ for a Superman” by The Flaming Lips
“Superman” by Sister Hazel

And from WAY back in the day, Donna Fargo’s “Superman”

“It’s Superman,” from the Broadway musical It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman. Probably other songs in the score mention him, too, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. And, all the songs involve him in one way or another.

Jim Croce-

And they say you don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off an 'ole Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Jim

Here’ the earlier thread on Superman in pop songs.

It may have been mentioned in the lists above, but for the life of me I can only remember a snippet from this one song; it goes (I think) something like this:

Superman (manmanman) <—that’s an echo effect
Do it to me Superman(manmanman)
???
Oooh, you get so deep inside…
??
Sorry, that’s all I got. Can anybody identify this one?

:smack: Oh, heck! How could I have forgot to mention **Sunshine Superman ** by Donovan?

Don Mclean sung a song called “Superman’s Ghost.”

I don’t wanna be like ol’ George Reeves
Stuck in a Superman role
I gotta long way to go in my career
And some day my fame will make it clear that I
Had to be a Superman.

Not mentioned in either thread is Weird Superman by Straw. Of course that’s probably because no-one else has ever heard of them.

That’s the same song mentioned in the OP. ‘Pocket full of kryptonite’ is a line from Jimmy Olsen’s Blues, which is the first song on Pocket Full of Kryptonite. Now I want to dig my copy of it out…

I mentioned it in the other thread, but might as well say it here, Superman is one of a bunch of superheroes mentioned in John Schneider’s They Got Nothin’ on Him.

Sing365 shows 617 entries when you do a fulltext search for the word “Superman.” May be some duplication from page to page but it’s quite an exhaustive list.

I won that LP in a radio call in about twenty years ago!

Lois Lane, by Uncle Bonsai

The Broadway Cast Album Data Base lists three songs from musicals:

It’s Superman from It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman
My Superman from Freeway Dreams
My Superman from The Gay 90’s
