Would it help if I posted a few of the times I and other posters have accused others of being crazy, paranoid, sexually deviant, stupid, addicted to drugs, etc.? I linked to a poster saying “up your meds”.
It’s the Pit. “You are out of your mind” ranks up there with “go fuck a cactus”. IOW it is not a specific insult at all - I do that to everybody. In the Pit.

So, let me get this straight,…you fully condone Shodan’s posts in regards to margin?
If the answer is yes, I now see why you get dogpiled. Ditto Shodan.
If it is true that Shodan said these things knowingly to margin, and continues to do so, he should be warned/should have been warned, and not been allowed to continue such posts. Some things are really beyond the pale.
My vote is for the moderators to have Shodan apologize to margin, or be banned, and for him to agree to never make such posts in the future, or be banned.
This is coming from someone who hates to see anyone banned, except in extreme cases. This is one of them.
If a person makes fun of someone using a throwaway line, and it turns out that that line is both true and at the core of a person’s life struggles, the decent thing to do is to give a full, no-excuses apology for using that line.
The alternative is to keep making snide comments that insinuate that, since the other person never said how personal that insult was, too goddamned bad for them.
Honestly? I think several people have said reprehensible and probably regrettable things in the Pit. I know I have. It’s irrelevant with regards to the rules and the environment of the Pit though. Furthermore, reprehensible is very subjective and there is no way other then mob rules to apply such a standard. Why don’t you read those posts by Ed Zotti (a couple posts above) from when an exceedingly similar situation not so long ago arose?
And condone? What I post is what I post. IF there is a Pit then people are free to use it according to the rules. That’s their prerogative. I don’t condone 99% of what is posted there. The other 1% are probably my posts.
And “How’s the psych ward?” ranks right up there with Huey Freeman’s bullshit.

I can’t remember everything I’ve read, here or anywhere, but I do believe a couple of the moderators have explained that “The Pit” is not an anything goes, free-for-all forum.
You picked up on the apology is due part, but you missed on the punishment part.
I revealed I have children on this board. You know how often they’ve been attacked in the Pit? You know how often a mod has said one word about the inappropriateness of said attacks?
Thing is, the ones since Lynn have been way too reluctant to enforce that.
Report the posts, and if you don’t hear back, open an ATMB thread to complain if you disagree.
You realize that I posted something from the former administrator that EXPLICITLY stated such behavior was allowable?
You realize that the stickied thread in the BBQ Pit, by that same administrator, EXPLICITLY disagrees with you?
Meh, I don’t like what Shodan said, but Huey Freeman was allowed to say worse on a daily basis for several months.
On a related note, the Pit sucks shit. It should be deleted. People don’t need a “release valve”. They need to act like adults, and if they can’t refrain from attacking other posters in the other forums then they should be banned for their own good.
More than anything, the Pit narrows the scope of acceptable opinion on the rest of the boards. Outspoken conservative posters are held to different standards of honesty and decorum than outspoken progressive posters. So conservatives end up getting pitted more often, and over far less, than even the boards most gleefully obnoxious progressives. The end result is only a handful of conservatives stick around, which makes the entire board less interesting. Get rid of the Pit. No-one needs it, and only the wrong people like it.
Look at the dates of the posts and compare them. Furthermore, very specific should beat very general and very nebulous in cases of disagreements.

I think that’s sad that people attack other people’s children under any circumstances.
I don’t know all the backstories here, and I only read certain threads. I read The Pit, but I don’t think I’ve ever posted there. I’m sure if I have, someone will let me know. I’m making a value judgement on what is right in front of me. What Shodan is doing looks right on par with what Huey did in the post cited by Greyson. And what happened to Huey?
The key thing about the Pit is that you can easily avoid it. It’s the one place here where you can have a “knock out drag out”, which means there’s only one place you have to avoid if it’s not your cup of tea. Keep in mind, also, that you can dish it out and not just take it.
I share this view.
