Just jailbroke my iPhone... now what?

I finally broke free of the shackles of Apple’s iron-fisted rule. I mainly did it because I found out there was an app on Cydia (Infinitifolders) that allows for infinite apps in folders instead of Apple’s maximum of 12. It was a huge relief to finally be able to effectively organize my 8+ pages of apps. I now actually only have two pages, with the second one being mainly folders.

I’m not really sure what else I can do with it. Any other cool apps/tweaks on Cydia that I should know about? Beyond that, what else is a jailbroken iPhone good for? I really don’t know very much about it.

That sounds to me like a fairly trivial reason to jailbreak.

Spend enough time swiping through 8 pages of apps and scrounging around in 5 folders of assorted games long enough and you might change your mind.

Explore costs of other carriers vs. ATT.

Oh, I jailbroke my iPhone before and I loved switching the look. There’s one that makes it look like a jungle scene, another that looks like the Flintstones with prehistoric rock looking apps, pretty cool stuff. Check out the free ones on Cydia.

You can also use a flashlight app that is actually rather bright (the regular iPhone apps are limited to not have such a drain on the battery).

That would require ‘unlocking’ the phone, which is different than jailbreaking. Jailbreaking gives root access (so you can install themes and such) and allows the installing of apps not from the App Store. Jailbreaking is the first step in unlocking, but often times unlocking requires more steps and is more likely to result in something going wrong.

Since that court decision a few months ago where it was deemed jailbreaking was 100% legal and didn’t violate any terms of use, jailbreaking is as easy as navigating to a webpage on your iPhone and clicking a link. Less than five minutes later you’re jailbroken.

Stupid me. I naively thought that “jailbreaking” and “unlocking” were the same thing.

Install MyWi and turn your phone into a mobile hotspot. You know, like Android phones can do.

I actually wasn’t really aware of the distinction either.

My MyWi app looks pretty cool. I’ll have to check it out.

Pretty much everything in this list sounds useful. It is almost a year old, though, so I don’t know how much is relevant.

Warning: It’s one of those slideshows, rather than a full page.
