Just started watching Big Love, a plot hole that's bothering me...

Please note that I’m only five episodes in so please spoiler box all spoilers beyond that. Thanks.

So you got Bill, a big time business man who owns to giant retail stores, yet he needs his wife, Barbara who’s a substitute teacher, to deposit her check directly into the main account, because I guess, money is tight.
This is driving me bonkers. It’s hard for me to believe that Barbara’s check could even make a dent into this man’s finances.

So is this a major fuck up by the writers or what?

[For anyone interested, Big Love is currently streaming on Amazon Prime]

This makes more and more sense as the story unfolds. You are gonna love Harry Dean Stanton in this series.

I haven’t seen the series, but requiring your wife to deposit her paycheck in your an account you have access to is textbook controlling behavior. Nothing to do with money, everything to do with making sure the wife knows her place and can’t get out.

This is not to say joint accounts are bad (heck, my wife and I have one), but if it’s required that could be.

I don’t recall all the particulars from season 1, but Bill (desperately, sometimes) needs his wives to know their place in the family. It’s an interesting dynamic throughout the series.

I agree that it will make sense if you keep watching. It’s more about control than money.

The much bigger plot hole is that

No one, not even the neighbors, figure out that he’s a polygamist. Anyone living in that area would recognize the “pioneer” style dresses and hairdo on Nikki and figure that she wasn’t just a single mom who “happened” to live next door to Bill.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I really liked the show. However, that bit required quite a bit of suspension of reality.
