Just what CAN/WILL Obama do on immigration?

That’s not gonna happen, Obama seems to be firm on deporting them in order to discourage the kids from making the dangerous trip in the first place.

It is perfectly possible to live a long life without violating the immigration laws of the US - particularly if you don’t live in the US.

Unless you are implying that people in Guatamala or Mexico are inherently less able to behave lawfully, and therefore they should be given special exemptions. Is that it?

Regards,
Shodan

Call me crazy, but if I was a Guatamalan parent and my kids were either going to get killed if they stayed in Guatamala or have a chance if they can somehow make it to the US, I’d send them to the US and screw the law.

In most cases but not all.

*Enforce the border. One doesn’t mop up the water before stopping the leak. Seal up the border, including using the military.

*Enforce employment laws. Hammer companies that hire illegals, pay under minimum wage, etc. w/ debilitating fines and long prison sentences.

*Entice illegals to leave. No services, nothing!

In a short period of time this problem can be cured. Few illegals here, few coming in.

Once that happens, a normal flow of legal immigration can occur giving Mexicans and others from Central/South America a real, humane shot of legitimately coming and living here. The way things are today are sick. It is wrong that illegals are tolerated by some, it is wrong that some want to legalize those who broke our laws, but it is also wrong that there is little legal channel for legal immigration from some places.
This can be cured but it requires tough action.

It seems to require complete lack of compassion. These are people who are coming in out of sheer desperation. To deny them sanctuary is inhumane. Part of the problem is the dehumanizing label of “illegals”. They are people.

If the humanity ascpect isn’t enough, sealing the border would be a negative for the economy. There are a lot of jobs that these border crossers do that Americans simply won’t do.

You know that’s never going to happen.

I might, too. But I’d also like to think that if the US government sent the kid back to me, I’d understand why.

And about the laws…what about the laws?

What about them? Who among us wouldn’t break a law to save himself or his child?

How far apart do we need to line up the soldiers? I think we learned this lesson the hard way from Vietnam’s “McNamara Line”.

Big Labor supports them. Do you want to start a Teamsters Strike?

So tell me what happens when you’re run over by a car, you’re rushed to an emergency room, and they won’t touch you because you don’t have a birth certificate or passport on you, so there’s no way for you to prove that you’re here legally.

You left out, “Repeal the 14th Amendment and replace it with one where somebody born here isn’t automatically a citizen.”

Besides - aren’t there still Western Union “offices” located in the parking lots of Home Depot/Lowe’s buildings? As long as they feel that they need to send money back home, and they’re not going to get any in their own country, you aren’t going to make much of a dent.

When there is no money to be sent back home, because employers large and small are terrified to hire them, they will leave.

It is the illegal immigrants and those that refuse to do the right thing about them who are hampering real reform, and real pathways to legal residence and citizenship for those who are willing to follow the law and come here legitimately.

taking tough action will not be easy on everyone. But the problem can be solved and solved quickly, and things will be better for everyone. But a stand has to be taken and some people need to suffer consequences.

Wanting open borders is a legitimate position to take. But since it’s not politically possible, we should be discussing what the limits are and how best to enforce them.

There is no version of an immigration reform bill that is going to let parents get away with sending their kids unaccompanied to the US.

Can we please get away from this “enforce the border” bullshit? First of all, the current “crisis” is because children are being caught at the border. If we weren’t catching and detaining them, they would disappear into the melting pot. Instead, we’re incarcerating them.

Secondly, I have yet to hear of a politician describe what a “secure” border would look like. Governor Goodhair said that the Texas border has 7 Border Patrol agents per mile vs. the other Southwestern States’ fifteen agents per mile. Going with the larger number, that means there is one agent covering the length of a football field (supposing all fifteen are on duty at the same time). Give that guy a good gun and a scope and let him shoot illegal crossers. Is that what a “secure” border looks like? Are we okay with shooting children? How far is too far?

Finally, there is the fantasy that a “secure border” even exists. The Berlin Wall was about as secure as it gets, yet 5000 people successfully crossed it. An estimated 200 people were shot and killed in the attempt. Are we okay with that? Is that what secure looks like? Currently, China has been unsuccessful in keeping North Koreans from crossing their border. Remember, China has the active cooperation of the DPRK as they attempt to keep their citizens in. The Maginot Line didn’t work out so well in the 1930’s. How did the Great Wall of China work out?

Even if we could erect an impenetrable force field that doesn’t allow even a Latin American mosquito to enter the USA, people of Hispanic heritage will surpass white Europeans in population within the next few years. This fact scares the pants off of some people. Those people will continue to act irrationally.

One of the things that strikes me when watching movies or programs about the Jim Crow era is how much effort was expended on enforcing something so incredibly stupid. This period in time will be viewed the same way in the future.

How are stop signs enforced? Yes, there are fines if one disregards a stop sign. Yes, the immediate consequences of disregarding a stop sign – a collision – can be swift and severe. However, I believe that most people stop at stop signs because they recognize that it is to everyone’s mutual benefit to do so.

My meaning is that we have to get away from the idea of enforcement by gunpoint. Create a system of laws in which all stakeholders can see the benefits of following the rules. Then, like top signs, the only people violating them will be people who genuinely make a mistake or who have some extraneous motive (like robbing a bank!). Everyone else will happily follow the rules without a second thought.

Well, if we deny undocumented immigrants jobs and taxpayer services, that’s a pretty powerful incentive to not cross the border.

I am a school teacher. It is much more effective to tell the students what I want them TO do rather than what NOT to do.

How about we create incentives to encourage people to DO what we would like, rather than creating incentives NOT to do something.

What adaher said followed the example you provided. And it’s precisely what we should do. Or do you now want to recommend that instead of giving tickets to those who do not stop at Stop signs we give lollipops to those who do? Your response above indicates that you really don’t want to do squat. Kindly cut the bullshit.

Sweet. How many are you willing to take into your own home and provide for?

That presumes they are coming for jobs and services. Unlike Mexican immigrants, the latest influx of unaccompanied children from Honduras and Guatemala are coming here to escape violence. The only way to disincentivize that is to make America more dangerous than where they came from.
