Justified 3/27/12 "Measures"

When Winn Duffy advised Body to kill Quarrels right away, which is very good advice, Body doesn’t. Instead he left Quarrels chained up with those two idiots. This is as dumb as Boyd has been since season one where he blew things up for kicks and was generally a racist charlatan preacher dumb enough to shoot a US marshall and fail at that.

He got outsmarted by his own Dad in S1, with the result of everyone in his “church in the woods” getting killed. Old Bo Crowder had some hard bark on him.

Spoiler regarding Quarles and Winona:

Both Neal McDonough and the actress who plays Winona have signed on to other series, so it is likely we won’t see much, if any, more of them, especially past this season.

I know. It’s tiresome when the star of the show comes out on top. Better to kill him off or keep him in jail for a season. Might as well do the same with Raylan while we’re at it. No way he doesn’t get caught in season 2 with the evidence money.

Yeah, but in the first season, he did things like firing a rocket launcher into a church in front of several witnesses. Nearly two seasons later, it’s like he’s not even the same character anymore. Which is fine, character growth and all, so whatever.

EDIT, since I didn’t see this until now:

I almost didn’t respond to this, because, you know, it’s hardly worth it.

But congratulations on your strawman!

Well… he’s not.

Quarles is a brilliant villain, right up there with Hannibal Lecter, IMO. I hope they keep him around, but it sure looks like his story arc is coming to an end pretty soon.

Quarles is about as far from Brilliant as you get.

Magg’s was Brilliant with a capital B.

Quarles is just a psycopath thats burnt all his bridges - He certainly knows how to get somethings done and started out being a ‘smooth’ operator - but his descent is anything but ‘brilliant’.

Wynn Duffy - He’s so smart he looks stupid - I’m not quite sure what will happen with him - he seems to like being second fiddle, perhaps because he gets the rewards without the jail time.

Or he realizes the first fiddle often gets shot.

I meant ‘brilliant’ in the acting and writing sense. As in “the guy plays the part brilliantly”. As an evil overlord, he’s failing miserably, of course. But he’s fun to watch, like Tuco in Breaking Bad.

I’ll give you that - Magg’s is/was still better

I’m a little worried about Quarles lining up with Limehouse against Limehouse’s lackey, Boyd and Dickey, simply b/c I kinda want Limehouse to come out on top.

And I’m so ready for Dickey to go away.

This is the only season I’ve seen, so I can’t compare. Seasons one and two are on hold at the library.

when come back, bring apple pie.

Well, considering that the scene you describe in in Ep 1/Pilot, and that Boyd Crowder wasn’t supposed to survive the episode, but Walton Goggins impressed Graham Yost and got picked up as a regular, so they went back and redid the dinner table shootout so that Boyd lived instead of died, I can see your confusion.

Let me explain.

Boyd Crowder/Walton Goggins was originally a one-off character/guest shot for the premier episode. He was scripted to die by Shot by Raylan at the dinner table shootout. But Walton Goggins impressed Graham Yost so much that it was decided to make him a regular character. Yost, Goggins, Olyphant and Leonard sat down and “brainstormed” a new story/character/season arc to include the character of Boyd Crowder. This necessitated some changes of character, starting with his Come To Jesus change-of-heart whilst recuperating from Death By Shot By Raylan.

So on the one hand, we have the Rebel-Yellin’, Rocket-Launchin’, Bank-Robbin’ Boyd.

OTOH, we have something more akin to a chessmaster. Boyd doesn’t do much, as he hasn’t got much to work with; Arlo’s losing it since Helen got killed, Johnny’s wheelchair bound and overcompensating, and Devil was a thorn in his side from day 1. It didn’t take a genius to see where he was headed after bucking Boyd’s orders via Ava over the pot. Devil was stupid greedy. But when opportunity presents itself, Boyd strikes.

I like this Boyd better. It was kind of implied that Boyd was a “Dark Mirror” version of Raylan, and watching that play out has been a LOT more entertaining than the alternative.

There are so many great characters on this show it’s unreal. It’s reminiscent of Deadwood that way. I think Art is my favorite though.

Or at least brush his hair.

I just really like the writing and action in this show. The bar confrontation was superb. The elder hitman admitting that maybe he never was that good to begin with instead of flexing his nuts and acting all big and bad was wonderful.

“Oh, shit! You just shot the guys that’s trying to kill the guy that you want dead!”

Art does get some of the better lines.

Indeed! And he makes a lot out of them. That’s the thing about this show (and very few others) that sets it apart: the creative people – including the actors – are all about telling fun stories and making them entertaining, instead of getting the star(s) all the juicy stuff to say and do. A springboard to better roles perhaps, but definitely fun viewing in the meantime. Even the people who have parts with no lines are convincing and seem to be into their jobs.

And just think of all the actots who have had one- or two-episode flashes and then are gone. How many other shows get that sort of commitment from decent actors?
