I’ve been in training all day - mandatory training, for time cards. Heh. It has not been fun, but at least it is over now.
I have a scarf that I’ve been working on that is a … bit lopsided. LOL That’s putting it mildly, actually. I’ve unraveled it several times but I guess I’m still learning to maintain tension, and the yarn is kinda stretchy. I think I’m just going to crochet until I’ve used up the yarn and then go ahead and wear the scarf. Who is going to look that closely at the margins anyways? I mean, other than me!
I leave two tails, preferably at the end/beginning of a row. Knots will always work their way to the outside and be visible. Always. Some people like to splice or use a russian join - these work better with wool, and tend to work better with thinner yarns.
When I weave ends, I basically wander around the back of the work for several stitches in one direction, then I switch directions, and then back track a bit, making sure the end doesn’t show on the right side. I try to keep ends near seams, then I just weave up and down the seam instead. I don’t think there are hard and fast rules, so long as you’re confident that your ends won’t work loose.
Do not do standed colorwork or intarsia if you hate weaving ends.
That’s the real beauty of knitting - as long as you like your results, you’re doing it “right.” The knitting police are not going to arrest you.
Hello lovely :). That’s what I think of when I think of a bike. Lately the trend seems to be for crotch rockets but I’m a fan of the Harley look.
Spring is a-blowin’ in down here. I can always tell when the seasons change because we get three very windy days and then a permanent temperature change. It’s nice that they announce themselves like that.
Overlap the yarn that is running out with the new yarn for about one or two stitches and then drop the old yarns thread ( or just knit until nothing is left.)
If it is 100% wool, you can spit-splice them together. Fray the end of the old yarn and the end of the new yarn, spit into your palm and rub the two together with a bit of an overlap ( half inch to inch.) until they are slightly felted together. Continue knitting and do the spliced part together carefully. When it dries, it will be fine.
Get a crochet hook and you can either work the direction that you were knitting and weave in or you can go upwards and weave in. Weaving in is not exactly my strong suit, so what I try to do is weave in the wayward ends as I knit or pick up that dangly bit of yarn once with each row passing, so it is knit vertically into the item.
Despite the near 60 degree temps and mud, slush and general crappiness, school was called this morning because of our back country roads being icy.
AIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Real snow days involve throwing them physically out the door at 9am fully dressed for play and tell them to go break their neck or something.
<keels over from intricacy of instructions, which requires Rigs to think in 3D and keep the steps straight> <and faints again when she realizes that there are MORE instructions farther down the page!> Where are my smelling salts?
Thanks and all, but like I said, I’m not ready for that challenge yet. No doubt as soon as someone shows me in person, I’ll :smack: and get it immediately.
Didn’t read any farther (further?), but want you all to know that I had a GREAT day at the library (we went to lunch! $1 hamburgers at a place called Duffy’s–I loved it!). AND I walked all the way up Michigan Ave from Randolph St station and then caught the bus, so I walked at least a mile. In the cool sunshine of a beautiful day. I love my job. (that one, anyway).
I feel like I should be really upset or something, but… Jay had a bunch of stuff happen to him in the past few years and he’s been thinking about it and decided he wasn’t up to being in a relationship right now. So… I’m single. I’m not upset so much as worried about him.
That’s okay, there’s some CUTE guys in my building.
That’s the problem… I’m not confident at all that the ends won’t work loose. There are a couple ends that have worked loose on the blanket I made for our living room. It seems like there’s always going to be a little end of some sort that sticks out. That’s the part I’m just not getting and that I find extremely frustrating.
I will stay far far away from intarsia. Thanks for the warning!
Good on the cute guys, sorry about the breakup. KnitWit, I used to make my own tortillas, both flour and corn. And then I had a baby. Now I have a Helpful Toddler who will not permit me to spend an hour in the kitchen frying tortillas. He needs to Help.
So now I buy them, which sucks, because mine were way, way better.
Dinner was extremely yummy.
Howdy Y’all! Been a funfilled two days. We went out to dindin with JoeDawg’s Daddy and Partner last night, then I came home and went to bed. I tried readin’ this mornin’ but didn’t do very well. I’m all sinusy due to the fact that Spring is beginnin’ to show up around heah. That means the beginnin’ of oak and pecan pollen. Joy. Plus controlled burnin’ which makes my sinuses get all ick. Such is life.
Mousie yay on the interview. Appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed.
ST sorry about the break out but you got the right 'tude. Scope out some cute boys and go pounce 'em!
BBBobbio nice terlet.
Look! It’s BooFae!
I don’t knit but if anybody is of a mind to knit up some of those knitted bootie type things, I like ‘em when it’s cold out. Just sayin’…
The last embroidery project I got involved with was strange…Terrible, actually.
A little background - DH is the one who actually touches fabric and thread. I’m the tech support, and for embroidery, there’s a fair bit of tech. Today’s sewing machines are really computers dedicated to driving a fistfull of servo motors. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to find the things are running some flavor of Linux.
Someone needed to re-image a laptop, install digitizing software, get it up on the network and handle the “heavy lifting” of the data side of the sewing room. Guess who…
So, it was last Friday that a friend calls up in a mild panic because they wanted to get a “Terrible Towel” for their husband, who’s a Steelers fan. Oddly enough, there’s nobody selling Pittsburgh-themed things in San Francisco. So, I hit the net looking for a good image, washed it through Photoshop on my Mac, squirted it down the wire to the embroidery PC, digitized it, then sent it off to the embroidery machine. About an hour later, our friend had their very own replica Terrible Towel.
DH managed to land a two-day gig as a replacement receptionist somewhere - Even if it pays minimum wage, it’s still more than a week’s worth of unemployment. Small miracles. Hope the state doesn’t send him an IOU.
We’re not worrying about the following week - we’ll be packing on Monday and Tuesday, and then we’re off to the airport on Wednesday. Remember our neighbor that we ferried around to the bank and grocery store after his van got totalled a few months ago? He’ll be driving us to the airport and picking us up later, saving us $300 - it’s gotten ridiculous how much Super Shuttle charges, especially for how un-super they really are. The last time I was in one of their vans, I feared for my life as the driver zig-zagged in and out of traffic and the door had no working handle on the inside. It was as if we were in the back seat of a giant blue police car driven by an overcaffeinated raccoon.
Yay on the interview, mousie! That’s excellent news.
Pretty kitty pictures, FCM. I really like her name, too. (I wondered how long it would take for someone to read “Kitty” instead of “Knitty.”)
Forgot to say how impressed I was with Bobbio’s terlet project.
Less tired tonight. Need to make Valentines.
And, wow, we really are awfully on-topic for us (guess the Dope was overdue for a knitting thread). I friended you on Ravelry KnitWit, couldn’t find you TheFaerie. Feel free to friend me, if you like. Same name as here.
Hi Surok! I can’t remember what I was looking at the other night on YouTube, but they had videos of all different styles of knitting: Portuguese, Russian, Peruvian… and the usual English and Continental. I knit continental, although my hands move around less than most of the demos I’ve seen.
taxi, take a look at the videos over at Knitting Help. I’ve learned several techniques over there. Whoever gives the instructions is really clear and the videos are a really good length; there are a few that I watched 3 or 4 times to make sure I was able to master the techniques. There are videos showing both English and Continental styles, so no matter how you knit, you can find the information you’re looking for. Joining yarn is toward the bottom of the knitting tips page. (Mudshark - this is a great place to start.)
She’s beautiful!!! I wish TheElf wasn’t deathly allergic to cats. I miss having fuzzy overlords.
gotpasswords Overcaffienated raccoon cracked me up. elenorrigby Trust me. Check out my second post about it and go very slowly. It’ll work. Or go to http://www.knittinghelp.com and you will find very well detailed videos of how this stuff works. It’s how I learned to knit. (the wonderful GardenTraveler beat me to it.)
TheElf and I are going for sushi tonight. Yay!
I have a new job position within the same company and I am way happier than I was. Some of you old-timers may remember I was having problems with a demanding boss, but he and I get along like gangbusters now. I have a way less stressful job and it is interesting a fun. (knock wood) I have a great life.
Good question… I seem to recall seeing the nice corn tortillas at Sun Valley, but don’t ask me where in the store or when I saw them. For some odd reason, Mexican food is a summer thing as far as my brain is concerned, so I tend to forget about stuff like tortillas and chipotles and tomatillos for months at a time.
Yay for the interview, Mousie! Fingers crossed for you.
Sorry to hear about the breakup, Tyger. Plenty more fish in the sea, though, and you may as well enjoy being young and single while you still can (man, so I miss being young and single sometimes… even the bad dates were fun because I could laugh about it afterwards)
Ziva is adorable, Mooooooom. I love her long fluffy tail.
OK, time to make a call to Mumsy Dearest. Wish me luck… she left a message on the machine and she doesn’t sound too good, which means I might be in for a good hour of ranting and raving about Little Sis.
My back is killing me. I guess it’s time to get crackin’ again.
I’ve been mopy for the last few days. Then I got the brainstorm that since the Duke/UNC Rivalry Game is on tomorrow I should go to the pub and watch it there, have a drink or two, see if there are any cute guys to chat up, that sort of thing. Then I checked my bank account and realized I’m 'bout broke because I had to save the house from foreclosure thanks to Former Roommate’s slack ass. That brought on the mopes again. So Complicated Roommate offered to give me a few bucks so I could go out anyway.
There’s a Former Roommate Hate Society going on in the house right now. Come to find out New Roommate went on a date with FR once. Once. They went to the movies and got some popcorn. He asked that she not put too much butter on it because he wouldn’t be able to eat it. So she drenches the popcorn in butter.
I could go on and on with the stories of how much we all hate Former Roommate, but I’ll abstain. But there are many. And the house is much calmer and happier (and smells better) now that she’s gone.
