Good news, and supports the theory that RFK et al are hurting Trump more than Harris at this point.
I think this goes here, not worth starting a new thread:
What is up with the Harris campaign and the Teamsters?
In short:
-Teamster president Sean O’Brien spoke at the RNC and is scheduled to speak at the DNC.
-Teamsters are voting on an endorsement through the month of August (so won’t have made an endorsement by the DNC)
-O’Brien says that Harris hasn’t responded to his request for a roundtable discussion with rank-and-file members, unlike every other candidate (including Biden) who was invited.
-O’Brien says that the 1.3 MILLION Teamsters are split 50-50 on which party to support.
Given all these facts, doesn’t it seem like Harris would be putting energy into making nice with them? I mean, I get being pissed off that O’Brien spoke at the RNC, but surely that’s not a good reason to snub him.
Am I missing something? Or is Harris missing a trick?
This appears legit. Jay Kuo is a partisan liberal, but he works to corrobate the items featured on his Substack. Both the video you linked and another large-crowd video from Eau Claire, WI were featured in today’s Status Kuo.
Same link:
Trump used to mock Democrats and Biden for not holding big rallies, but those days are no more. The numbers in attendance are sky high, and the local press coverage is comprehensive.
Jay Kuo quotes the New York Times, same link as the previous post (my emphasis):
The protestors had begun chanting, “Kamala! Kamala! You can’t hide! We won’t vote for genocide!” As the New York Times reported,
When protesters first interrupted Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in Detroit on Wednesday evening, she smiled, with a gentle corrective. “I am speaking now.”
But as the disruption continued, her patience ran thin. “You know what?” Ms. Harris said, with the sudden force and resolve of a parent in the driver’s seat who has had it . “If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking.”
Harris had also met and spoken privately with Uncommitted National Movement founders Layla Elabed and Abbas Alawieh, where the Vice President shared her sympathies, called the loss of life in Gaza “horrific,” and expressed an openness to discuss the idea of an arms embargo. The founders stated, following the meeting, that it was clear Harris “could lead our country’s Gaza policy to a more humane place.”
To claim Harris has disrespected the protestors, following both this meeting and her earlier polite admonition, ignores these facts. The moment, however, did solidify her toughness in the eyes of many voters who were concerned she might not stand up to the far left of the party and its often disruptive tactics.
An arms embargo will be a nonstarter and she is being disingenuous to say she is open to discussing it. Israel and Iran are on cusp of all out war, with the poor citizens of Lebanon to be the people to suffer this time. There is zero chance that the US would not keep Israel fully equipped for that. The less equipped Israel is the more likely the US is to get pulled in directly. Carriers moved in place already.
She can (and I think should) promise other levers that I am sure exists, but pressuring Israel with actions that put them at existential risk, and that embolden Iran, will not happen.
Hey, my wife and I just passed 20 years ago a week ago.
Jim Gaffigan got it right: “My wife loves me very much, but just about once a week she gives me a look that say, ‘Uh, Sorry but I’m gonna have to let you go.’”
Oh cool. I don’t think there’s any way that Utah could possibly flip to Harris – if the state didn’t go for McMullin over Trump in 2016, it’s not going to go for Harris over Trump in 2024 – but if enough LDS individuals flip in Arizona and Nevada that could make a difference for Harris, because LDS are very conscientious and they will actually go out and vote.
Interestingly – and I didn’t know this until recently; I think I wasn’t at church that day – the church leadership caused this to be read in church last year (2023):
I couldn’t believe it when I found that out. In church-speak that’s like practically yelling “I know you’re Republican (*), I’m Republican too, but don’t vote for Trump just because he’s there, just look at the guy!”
Now, will a letter sent more than a year ago make a difference now? Who knows. (I also don’t anticipate that they’ll send another letter out, but I would love them to prove me wrong.)
(*) Not all LDS, of course! But very much a majority.
On Xitter there’s a lot of people who said this wrecked her chances to win Michigan, because the large Arab community there won’t support her. Personally, I doubt it will have that big effect but I really don’t know much about Michigan politics.
Neither do they?
Yeah, over one “hey, I’m talking here”? The Xitters are just xitting.
Well let’s try to put some numbers on it.
Worst case in MI, per the Arab American Institute, back when it was Biden:
Quoting out of order. First is the max loss. Second what they claim would win them back.
Barrons is reporting that ABC has confirmed a Trump/Harris debate September 10th.
Isn’t that the one that he’d backed out of previously?
Yes, he tried to move to Foxnews. She was planning to show up to the ABC one, which he had already agreed to, even if he wasn’t there.
He has kind of maximized his weak quotient hasn’t he? Tantrum ignored and he complies.
I won’t show!
Do this one instead!
I don’t need to and you can’t make me!
Okay.
NBC News is stating this was a Harris campaign press release re: Trump’s press conference today. If so*, fast and funny. **I can’t find the original source - can anyone confirm it?.
This is the first page…there is more to it, though:
Feel-good story of the day. They present 3 occasions where her crowd was chanting “LOCK HIM UP!” and she said, look, that is not what we are about; we will let the courts handle that; we are about fighting for the future.
She is working on slowly moving the discussion off of Individual-ONE and onto real issues. That is a good sign.
They want the solidly anti-union GOP?!?
So, they dont want the team that tries to help Gaza, and instead wants trump who 100% supports anything Netanyahu does? How does this make sense?
People collectively often don’t make sense.
As far as the Teamsters, hard to be more blue collar and MAGA is largely blue collar. Doesn’t seem to matter that even when the Republicans were rational, they were basically anti-union.
Who previously supported Nixon in ‘72 and Reagan in ‘84 (yes even after the ATC mass firing).
