I believe she’s trying to show she’s not far left like Trump is accusing her of being, and definitely not anti-gun where she wants to take everyone’s guns away (neither is Tim Walz). But there’s a tightrope you need to walk where you don’t want to go too far in showing you’re not that far to the left.
At least she’s not talking about shooting people in the middle of 5th Avenue.
Yeah, because security will do it for her, more accurately and with less fallout. And she said those two things on different days in different venues. So what you are doing is taking two statements - well apart and conflating the two. Harris also said her gun is securely locked up, so, going over to the saffe, dialing the combo, and taking out the gun- by that time the Secret Service has the guy already down.
Yeah, ok, and people put things that Trump says through the partisan sanitizer, too. I’m talking about what she said to Oprah, on the same day, right in a row.
I haven’t seen the exchange or how she put it. I guess it depends on if she gave the impression that she’d shoot someone in self-defense if she absolutely had to, but was very reluctant to do it and would rather the authorities took care of it, or if she gave the impression that she’d eagerly or at least casually shoot an intruder. I would assume that her feeling is that it would be a last resort, but it’s how she came across to the viewing audience that matters.
I own a gun myself so I’m definitely not judging. Of course, I keep it locked up; it’s an emergency I pray I never, ever have to use. Shooting someone would be a nightmare. I’d just rather do it than be murdered or have my family come to harm.
OK, I found the clip. Ignore the first 15 seconds which is the second half of the interaction. Starting at 0.15 is the full context. You can tell me how you interpret it. I don’t interpret it as her talking about the Secret Service.
They are not. She mentioned she was a gun owner during the debate, and later on Thursday mentioned intruders would get shot
Harris’ gun – which one source described as a pistol that could fit in a small purse – is securely stored inside her home in Los Angeles, an aide to the vice president told CNN. Harris had mentioned owning a firearm in 2019 during her unsuccessful presidential campaign
See my clip above where she immediately goes from telling Oprah she has a gun to the shooting the intruder quote. I watched it live. The clip starts with the shooting the intruder quote but then goes back starting at 0.15 and plays the entire unedited clip.
Well, it looks like the election has started. Almost 4k people in Fairfax County, VA, voted yesterday (Friday) in the first day of early voting. This is about 3X the number who early-voted in 2020 (COVID year, so who knows if this even matters).
I have absolute confidence that if (please when) elected Harris will be a very fine president positioned solidly center left. And this sort of pandering is why I had not loved her as a candidate in 2020. It won’t hurt her but she is overplaying the hand reassuring gun rights folks.
Which they will, because Trump is too cowardly to go through that meat grinder again. He’ll make up some nonsense excuse. Which means that Harris still leaves people remembering her dominating performance, and they get to see Trump peeing his pants in fear.
IMHO, Kamala’s shooting comments were winning the battle but losing the war. In the short term, it’ll make her look tough and gain support from some gun supporters. But in the overall picture it hurts the bigger cause; it’ll further promote possession of guns for defense and make guns look good, not bad.
Guns for defence are fine, and she specifies this. It’s the automatic weapons she’s concerned about. I think she will actually broaden her appeal with this statement, because it makes her more relatable.
Gun ownership and even conceal and carry permits are extremely common among active and retired prosecutors (and judges) due to the high risk of reprisal by the violent sorts of people they piss off as part of their job.
