Kamala Harris and the runup to the 2024 Presidential Election {No more on Guns}

Uh, I figure her odds on the popular vote are 95% or higher. She has that. In most countries, this wouldn’t be tense.

The issue is, as we know, that we have a very strange system. And she can win, but still lose.

I don’t think someone like Trump can ever win the popular vote.

I put up a Harris for President sign at the end of my driveway last week. Nobody has taken it down in this 65% blue town, but two of my neighbors just put up new Trump signs, including our rude asshole neighbor (whose political alignment was heretofore unknown, but suspected nonetheless) with: “TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERTHING - WAKE UP AMERICA”.

Neighbors…can’t live with em. (that’s the end; nothing to add to that)

There’s a house that I pass sometimes on my commute, that last I passed (before Kennedy dropped out) was flying a big “Kennedy for President” banner. Today, it was replaced by a Harris/Walz banner, plus yard signs for a number of other Democratic candidates. So at least some former Kennedy voters are going Harris.

I’m grateful my little condo complex (18 units) doesn’t allow political signs; I’d rather now know if any neighbors are trumpists. I’ve seen quite a few Harris/Walz signs, hardly any Trump ones, but I live in a blue part of a blue state.

One sign I see must have originally been a Biden/Harris sign, but it’s been hand-painted over so the message is:

We won’t go back!
Bye Don!
Harris

Two weeks ago I ordered a Harris Walz yard sign, but the order status still says “awaiting fulfillment”. Hopefully this is because of sky high demand and not because of poor management.

Here’s a really great ad for Harris. Narrated by Sam Elliott and his lovely voice. He doesn’t holdback. My favorite political ad I’ve seen so far.

We ordered our Harris/Walz sign almost 4 weeks ago.

You can probably go to your local Harris/Walz HQ and get a free sign. I volunteer at our local HQ and give out signs all day.

I know it’s one poll in one county in PA, but I’ll take a lead over Trump wherever it appears right now even if it’s just 5%.

Did you get it yet?

Really. My wife ordered ours on Amazon (without my knowledge). I told her the local Dems would have given us a half dozen for free.

Keep in mind that anyone might be selling political merch online. It could just be a random person selling custom merch for their own personal profit. If you want your purchase price to go to the campaign, be sure to get your signs from the campaign or an authorized seller. That also goes for when you’re at a rally. On your way to the rally you might see tables with merch for sale, but that may just be a random person tagging along the rally stops selling stuff. To make sure your money goes to the campaign, get your merch from the campaign’s booth at the rally.

Our county Dem HQ really did run out of Harris/Walz signs twice in the past month, and say’s they’ll get replenished in about a week. So it is happening…I, too, hope from unexpected demand rather than poor management.

Our county Democratic headquarters – in a quite red district – also ran out, and had to re-order. And they’d thought they’d ordered too many the first time.

They were back in stock, last I looked.

Not yet.

I’m reading a newspaper article about why the Teamsters didn’t endorse Harris. It says the president is the Teamsters asked to speak at both the Republican and the Democratic national conventions, and the Democrats turned him down, but he spoke to the Republicans.

I would have thought “president of the most notable union in the US” might have merited a slot.

Also, the whole article is discouraging. It mentions several local and regional councils that have endorsed Harris (and maybe none have give so far as to endorse Trump) but it also says that Harris isn’t very popular among members. Less popular than Biden.

The Teamsters are far less influential than they were in the past. I’m not sure how much weight their endorsement is worth at this point. The value would be if the got the rank and file out actively campaigning for a candidate. How often does that happen anymore?

Also, I was reading most Unions did endorse her. It seems like the Teachers Union is actively campaigning against the Republicans at least. Not sure if the are also campaigning specifically for Harris though.

Several sub groups of the Teamsters are actively working for Harris. The new president has brought a wave of activism to the Teamsters. They’ve been active in a lot of recent union activity locally. It feels like a lost opportunity, and a reflection of an underlying problem.

When a union’s rank-and-file is essentially a captive audience for AM radio, I don’t hold it much hope for Democratic support.

Yeah–I wish Harris had courted the Teamsters more heavily. This feels like a missed trick to me. I similarly think she should’ve taken a meeting with RFK, to string him along with empty platitudes if nothing else, to blunt his petulance.

She seems to have little patience for dudes with big egos, which is 100% legit–but a little bit of pandering could mean the difference between having an enemy and not having an enemy, and in this case, she needs the fewest enemies she can manage.
