Kamala Harris' recent comments on guns

A district attorney is part of the law enforcement community. They even have badges. Harris was a district attorney.

Do you think police are more equal than others and should not have a gun?

ETA: It is weird how hard you are trying to paint Harris in a bad light because she owns a gun. I thought you supported gun ownership and would be thrilled that finally there is a democrat running for president who owns a gun and is not likely to try to take yours. Not sure why that seems to scare you.

Harris is full of shit and her “I’m a gun totin’ babe” has apparently fooled you, which I am not surprised by.

Why is she full of shit? Do you think she is lying about owning a gun since (at least) 2019?

Fooled me too I guess. She’s a genuine bad ass.

Anyway, if a voters are going to decide based on which candidate is more full of shit, I think Harris is in great shape.

Lots of elitist own guns. But they would prohibit your right to own one.
Her stance that all of a sudden (after years of supporting draconian gun control laws) that she is some pro-gun, gun rights defender is complete bullshit. If you’re impressed that she owns a gun take the blue pill and believe whatever you want.

According to the FBI (page 10) 0.004% of burglaries end in homicides. I’m not entirely sure if that includes homeowners killing intruders or just vice versa.

More kids get killed in school than get killed by burglars.

Seriously? We’ve known she’s a gun owner for a long time. And, if you own a gun for protection, you obviously intend to use it.

She’s a prosecutor. Of course she has learned to use a gun to protect herself. It’s Trump you can’t imagine actually handling a gun.

And she hasn’t tried to take people’s guns. That’s called an NRA talking point. She’s called for the background checks and the same restrictions Bill Clinton got on “assault weapons” which actually seemed to work. The idea that making it take a bit longer to buy a gun is somehow taking away people’s guns is silly.

We buy what she’s saying because it’s what she’s always been saying. The only difference is the nice soundbite.

Really? Where has she done that?

Near as I can see she supports red flag laws and universal background checks.

Her running-mate, Tim Walz, is a life long gun owner and avid hunter and he supports the same things. Is Walz a full of shit elitist gun owner?

[quote=“BigT, post:87, topic:1007591, full:true”]

I already posted what her and Biden wanted and it’s far, FAR beyond what Clinton got.

The 1994 ban did nothing. There were warehouses full of “pre-ban” so called “assault weapons” that were legal to still sell that even the DOJ said would take close to 100 years to get soaked up into the populace.

If you’re impressed that she owns a little pistol (which she doesn’t need per Secret Service protection) by all means gush.

So, it’s not enough that she owns a gun, she needs to own a big ass gun?

That makes perfect sense if the only time your friend fires that gun is at that particular intruder, but real life isn’t made up of one-and-done snapshot moments.

If they support or oppose something they must be wrong, because they are Democrats.

Yeah that’s the key point here. In terms of gun control policy this is no different to any democratic candidate in my lifetime. If you believe in the right to keep guns in your home for self defense (which is about as controversial as “I support the troops” for a US politician) then you implicitly believe you can shoot an intruder. But by saying it this way she’s given herself a frankly amazing sound bite, one that could actually peel away few votes among moderates (the “I don’t like Trump but I’m afraid the Democrats are going to take my guns” crowd), in a way simply drily stating her beliefs about gun ownership would never do.

This is really good politics, and it’s why I am cautiously optimistic we might win this thing. I cannot imagine any other democratic candidate being this good at this, even Obama or Bill Clinton.

The vitriol we are seeing about this statement only makes me happier. This clearly hurts the NRA crowd.

If “full of shit” is a reason not to vote for her, who will you be voting for instead?

That is awful. Sorry to hear that.

I’m not a gunowner, and if someone broke into my house I have no real plan and lord knows what might happen to me or my family. Panic and 911. Maybe lie and say LEAVE NOW because I have a gun! Now…If someone broke into my friend’s house, it’s not going to end well for the burglar because it is very unlikely to be fair. My friend is armed, trained, and cool-headed. The thief would have every chance to leave, be told it loud and clear, and have every reasonable chance to decide their fate. This is pretty much every gun owner I personally know. They know how to handle guns like they know how to safely drive - it’s second nature.

As to the OP, it’s just a good centrist argument to make. It reminds me of Beto and how he handled it wrong (for Texas). If you want to go from A to Z, you cannot go straight to Z. So saying “Hell Yes We’re going to take your AK-15, AK-47…” which fairly got condensed to “I’m going to take your guns” is a loser here. That’s going straight to Z. You’ll get a lot of attention and likes, but you won’t get anything done. Unfortunately, you need to get there slowly. People would, and have and did, actually go for that (see the 2022 Gun Safety/mostly symbolic Bill - Senator John Cornyn of Texas voted for it - it might not end well for him in 2026 but he did risk it for a baby step). Regardless, that’s step B and has to be done before more could be done.

So Harris’s stance is helpful in making those baby steps of progress. She’s basically saying I’m a gunowner, I think guns are OK, but we need some reasonable restrictions (ie, we got over the symbolic step in 2022, now we can get to steps C, D, etc.). It’s very pragmatic to get actual change.

How does Trump measure up? I’d be surprised if he ever held a gun in his life (and if he did it was probably when he was a teenager).

More, I’d be willing to bet Trump will be more hostile to gun owners than Harris. The guy just had two people try to shoot and kill him in the last two months. Also, autocrats/wannabe dictators are not keen on arming the populace.

Paywalled, and that dates from 2020

I use Mass Charm Person. .

Harris has never tried to ban handguns.

Because most pro burglars make sure no one is home first.

Yeah, a restriction on assault weapons. Big Fucking deal. And fine by me. I am pro Bill of Rights and thus pro 2nd, but assault style weapons are not something I really care about. The Biden pla- now 4 years old and NEVER mentioned since, would allow those who owned such a gun to keep it, and ban further sales. Note that Biden and Harris have not mentioned such a plan since, and in fact their talking point for the last four is simply a 1994 new sales ban.

Which has been my stance all along.

She hasnt had Secret Service protection all her professional law enforcement life. As a DA and Attorney General she got death threats.

He also banned bump stocks (overturned by SCOTUS, of course).

Like this guy, for instance;

Suppose you’re Dr. Strange, and you could look into the future. Oh no wait, sorry the present, and see that guns are the leading cause of death for children in the USA. Would you still support easy access to firearms?
