But if he’s saying “Midwest guy tacos”, the haters are going to say, “Look! He can’t even say “White”! Why is he so ashamed of being White? White Power Pride!!!”
Race was always going to be an issue in this election. They can get out ahead of it, and show they’re not afraid to address the issues of race, or they can let the racists set the agenda.
Authenticity is what it is. No one is really genuinely offended or going to change their vote over an innocuous comment, and even if so it is a wash. It’s like comedian George Lopez and his bit about how the salsa might contain onion.
Totally understand that position, but the campaign has a massive phalanx of surrogates who are, and who will be, blanketing the airwaves until the election.
Hypocrisy may be a given in politics, but I think there’s an opportunity to neutralize broad swaths of MAGA attacks with the occasional flag thrown on the play.
I know we’ve moved from the house ownership/stock market investment issue to the taco issue, but I’d like to marvel a bit more at the hard right attack on Walz because he doesn’t own stocks and bonds or (currently) own a house.
If that (plus tacos on the side) is the best the opposition can do to attack, I feel very, very VERY hopeful that a Harris-Walz win is in the cards.
Definitely. One is a small authentic self deprecating joke. The other is not all funny and is overthinking it. His appeal relies on his relaxed authenticity.
This. Does the Right really think “Tim Walz is a guy just like you while Trump is a billionaire who never wears the same pair of socks twice!” is a winning argument with the middle or middle-lower class? Because if it is, then we already live in a plutocracy and there’s no hope for America.
I posted in the other thread that the issue is that Walz lied about the tacos. His Turkey Taco Hotdish recipe specifically included a can of mild chopped chilies. He is just pretending to like white guy/midwestern guy tacos when really he eats them with a miniscule amount of spice.
It is with my father. Point out how Trump’s a dishonest tax cheat? Oh, that’s just being savvy!
These people live within a reality distortion field, and it adjusts as needed to accommodate the image of Trump, projected on a pedestal. The rich are different from you and me. And so are their admirers.
Did one of the MAGAts really try out “Tampon Tim”? Pointing out that Tim acknowledged women’s concerns doesn’t seem like a winning strategy. But what do I know, I’m just an old white guy.
Walz is pretty much the Platonic ideal of a Suburban White Dad. They’re trying to attack him for doing Dad Stuff and it’s not going to work because most people have a dad like him, have a friend whose dad is like him, or wish they had a dad like him. What are they gonna go for next? He has the complete discography of Bob Seger on vinyl? He gets flustered if someone adjusts the thermostat? He wears socks with sandals in the summertime?
You can’t just say something like that and not link to a puff piece where he boasts about his home stereo system and says how much he relates to “Against the Wind”.
