To follow up on this, I tracked down the recipe itself, and while the quantity of chili powder isn’t listed in the ingredients, the method itself says to use 2 teaspoons.
2 teaspoons of chili powder, spread across a pound of meat, a bag of tater tots, a bag of frozen corn, a container of sour cream, and about a pound of cheese is gonna provide just the tiniest bit of flavor. That’s less than a packet of McCormick’s taco seasoning. For comparison, I use 6 tablespoons (9 times as much for you non-Americans) of chili powder when I make a batch of chili of about the same size as this casserole.
In short, the people who are claiming “It’s racist to say white people can’t handle spice!” and “Tim Walz is lying about not liking spice!” are inadvertently showing that they themselves cannot handle spice.
I saw a TikTok where someone was describing how they loved Walz, but they’re jealous that he’s so good around his kids, and it maked her mildly sad because their father wasn’t affectionate.
Going back a bit to the other topic that the GOP seems to be focused on with Walz, I found this recent video that I think really does a good job of giving the actual full timeline of Walz’s retirement from the National Guard, with additional details that I’d not heard brought up.
The main details I didn’t know are the fact that, under the rules then, he would not have likely been told ahead of time that they were considering deploying his squad to Iraq, and that training to go there wouldn’t start until after the orders. Advanced information is a new thing.
But I also found it easier to follow than most articles on the topic, and I thought it might be helpful.
I actually went to the Omaha rally with my wife, since her sister did not want to go. We brought sandwiches and ate them in the line from 9-11. Water was free. After the short line up to metal detectors after 11 it was about 3 hours of standing. The venue was too small with such a hastily put together event. The balcony had seats. Worst part was the too loud funk/disco/roller skate type of music from a DJ, with almost nothing but the bass to be heard.
After all that (5 hours or so), speeches by local democrats and 45 minutes of Walz and his wife (first 15 minutes) and a Nebraska student they had once taught. Educators were heavily promoted. Stump speech items are these:
many of the items reworded to NE audience.
I believe the venue problem was mostly to do with the federal agents assigned to this. About ten of them had to clear 2500 people through security in about 30 minutes. Also, there was not time to prepare the outdoor arena there. Think “rooftops.” The extra people got herded there to watch it all on video screen. So up to 4000 got to see something.
I think the candidate was the right one for nearly all of the middle of the country. They are not going to win Iowa or Missouri, but the upper midwest for sure.
Harris/Walz may very well need that one Nebraska 2nd-Congressional-District electoral vote to win the big prize:
Does a single electoral vote really matter? It seems far-fetched, but there is a very common scenario in which Democrats win the “blue wall” battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin while losing the Sun Belt battleground states of Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and North Carolina. That would give them 269 electoral votes — with the Nebraska Second District vote putting them over the top…
It’s certainly worth noting that Tim Walz is headed to Omaha or campaign appearances this very weekend.
Can confirm. I worked exclusively with minority populations (anywhere from 80-90%+ depending on the year) and acknowledging this stuff is the only way through it. “Fake” is a death sentence in terms of building trust, and the easiest way to get that label is by saying or even implying that the sociocultural differences that define their lives aren’t worth being part of the dialogue.
The only people who are going to get turned off by “white guy tacos” were never going to vote for Harris in the first place. But I guarantee there are plenty POC who were delighted by the self-own.
And plenty more white Midwesterners who were delighted. The idea that Walz should bowdlerize himself is silly. His whole deal is that he’s some kind of Ur-Minnesotan. The man knows what will and won’t play well with that voting base.
Also, that clip was funny as hell. When Kamala says “you’ll be fine, we have some cantaloupes,” I laughed for a solid 20 seconds.
This is very well said. Its like in the Office, when Michael asked an employee what the polite word for “Mexican” was. If you pretend to be utterly oblivious to culture, or if you really are, ypu come across as someone who thinks being in a minority group is a little embarrassing, so you are trying to avoid mentioning it. And generally the safest way to do that is to make jokes about yourself.
Amen. Speaking as someone who can’t handle hot things, canned green chilis and supermarket taco seasoning are not hot. My children mock me for my inability to handle heat and I can eat both of those.
“Just had an idea how to troll the Republicans. Steal the “Build a Bear” idea, but call it “Build the Walz!” You make your own Walz plushie, like a mash-up of “State Fair” Walz and “Gay-Straight Alliance” Walz.”
Thanks! I’m not sure if they’d actually do it because I don’t know if Hot Ones expresses any kind of political leanings and it is probably for the best in terms of audience if they stay neutral. Also, Da Bomb Beyond Insanity (the sauce everyone hates) is basically pepper spray in sauce form so the Secret Service might not let the candidates willingly put it in their mouths. But what I would love to see is the questions. Sean Evans comes up with some incredible deep questions that surprise every guest in a good way.
I’m also looking forward to the inevitable Epic Rap Battle of History although I would imagine they’ll do that much closer to election day so they don’t miss too many headlines that will be great fodder for jokes. And to bring that thought back to the topic, I am predicting Tim Walz will be portrayed by EpicLloyd.
Walz had a rally in Nevada recently. Good idea, considering it might be critical and he is a hometown boy. I hope he brings up numbers in the Sun Belt like Arizona.
