Kansas City, here I come!

Hello any and all KC Dopers,
I have accepted a position with a KC firm and will be moving to the KC area shortly. We’ve been looking at houses in the Blue Springs area. Locating in Blue Springs makes it a little easier to get back to the St. Louis area, where I am now. What are the ‘must do’s’ and ‘must see’s’ in the KC area? What are the ‘stay away from at all costs’? Any info on KC in general would be appreciated.

Mods: If this should be in GQ, feel free to move.

You really ought to contact poster Skip Magic. He lives in the KC area, I’ve been there for Dopefests.

I’m a Blue Springs native.

It’s a nice enough town, but not much to do at night. Good for raising kids, good school district. Taxes are rather high because of the schools, so if you’re not raising kids, look elsewhere (Independence if you want to be closer to a city type atmosphere, Oak Grove or Grain Valley if you want to be slightly closer to St Louis.

Must sees and dos depends on what you like to do. Shopping? Country Club Plaza or Zona Rosa or Crown Center. Clubbing? Westport or Lawrence (where I live, about an hour west of Blue Springs).

Where will you be working? Commutes can be terrible and there is really no public transportation.

FilmGeek ,
I will be working downtown KC and I have been told the commute is bad, but it couldn’t be as bad as trying to beat my way across the 3 chokepoint bridges into downtown St. Louis. I actually live (right now) in Illinois. We did look at Oak Grove and Grain Valley some, but have pretty much settled on Blue Springs. The last child leaves the nest in 2 weeks for the Army, so the schools are not a big issue, but we do think they will help when and if we ever decide to sell.

Looking to get you a crazy li’l woman? Gonna stand on the corner of 12th & Vine, with a bottle of wine?

It’s not that bad from downtown to Blue Springs. I live in the West Bottoms, the industrial district that is attached to downtown KC.
