Kansas GOP Gubernatorial Primary - conflict of interest?

I agree, but Kris Kobach as governator would suck way worse than my current Gov. Brian Sandoval (he’s been a great Gov. AFAIK), for instance.

Of course I’m biased, but I think it’s a fine place to live. And hopefully it’ll get better in November.

You have a lot more faith in your fellow Kansans than I do.

It’s probably wishful thinking on my part. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Aaaand… Colyer has just thrown in the towel.

Yep. And now we get to watch Orman split the moderate and Democratic votes, and Kobach will probably be our next governor.

But maybe, just maybe, somebody will find more examples of Kobach’s incompetence and the Kansas voters will see the light.

Ah, hell, who am I kidding?

I hear it’s quite flat. I’d probably feel at home there.

Yeah if Orman wasn’t in the race I’d feel a lot better about Kelly’s chances. I guess it comes down to whether there are more disgruntled Dem or GOP voters who are willing to vote for an independent. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he can split more of the GOP vote, but I’m not terribly optimistic.

You’d need a perfect storm of vote-splitting in exactly the right way, along with a number of other factors, for a Democrat to win a Kansas gubernatorial race. It might happen, but it doesn’t make any sense to count on it.

Kansas is an interesting state in that regard. It’s been ages since they elected a Democrat to the Senate, but eastern Kansas has elected Democrats to Congress recently and I wouldn’t be surprised to see either the 2nd or 3rd district elect a Democrat this fall. As far as governor, it’s gone back and forth between Democrats and Republicans every term in the almost 40 years I’ve been living here:

John Carlin (D)
Mike Hayden (R)
Joan Finney (D)
Bill Graves (R)
Kathleen Sebelius (D)
Sam Brownback (R)

And Brownback came pretty close to losing re-election to Paul Davis (D). So really, we are due for another D.

This is why I can’t stand third party candidates. Orman seems like a decent guy but he’s just getting in the way, and he’s going to give the race to a right wing extremist.

And what happens in a state like Kansas foreshadows what can happen nationally under the wrong circumstances. Third party candidates could become stronger; counter-intuitively, it also makes fringe candidates stronger.

Sorry for bumping a three month old thread but I didn’t think it was worth starting a new one. Greg Orman’s campaign treasurer resigned yesterday and endorsed Democrat Laura Kelly.

Orman has been polling around 10% while Kelly and Kobach are in a tight race. Kelly has been getting a TON of endorsements from moderate Republicans, which I find encouraging. But I still worry about interference and shenanigans from Kobach affecting the outcome.

There no chance in hell she wins.
