Kathy Griffin; "Jesus" remarks a bit more offensive that reported

Why? Do you think she hurt Jesus’s feelings?

Can I sum this up?

Comedian makes joke. Frequently offended person gets offended.

I’d say something about the Pope’s religion or his bathroom habits, but I wouldn’t want to upset Bill Donohue.

I don’t think Jesus really cares. But a billion Christians might find having their deity referred to in such a blasphemous way just a tad offensive.

It’s not blasphemous, it’s insulting. Not that that necessarily makes it different, but it’s probably worth saying.

I think this is one of the few things that an atheist ought to be able to directly empathize with. When a person taunts or ridicules someone you love deeply, it affects you. Think of it as someone talking about your mother, or father, or beloved brother or sister.

So what?

They’re offended, and perfectly free to not watch Kathy Griffin’s show. I think she’ll live.

What on earth is it that makes people think they have a right to never be offended?

Jesus, in addition to having been dead for 2000 years, is JESUS, and I imagine that he doesn’t especially need my indignant hand-wringing on his behalf.

I never said that KG should be censored, censured, or otherwise, or that people should expect to never be offended. I did say that what she said could reasonably be construed as offensive.

One of my students made a comment about the Grammy Awards:
“Here are these assholes who sing songs to my kids about bangin’ their bitch ho’s, killing people and dealing drugs and when they win the Grammy, they point to the sky and say ‘Thank you Jesus!’ What a bunch of bullshit.”

Is the Catholic League pleased to hear those heartfelt praises to the all mighty?

I, in fact, worship Kathy Griffin. I’m thinking of founding a church.

She is not required to respect religious beliefs or defer to those who do. She is a comedian and anyone who’s seen her bit should have expected something that was sure to displease some folks in the audience – any audience. I’m sure they would have been fine with another group being the butt of her jokes. Oh well…I guess that day they were “the statue.”

You’re in luck!

There’s a genre of joke specifically aimed at Yo Mama. Yep, the Yo Mama joke.

But wait! There’s more!

A TV show based on nothing but Yo Mama jokes.

That’s what your sister said.

I thought the “Daytime” Emmys were the Emmys for soap operas and talk shows and stuff that airs … you know … in the daytime. I had been led to believe this Kathy Griffin thing occurred at the non-televised technical awards show for the regular, “Primetime” Emmys.

I’m so friggin’ confused.

I don’t know what you’re on about, but I didn’t say anything about any of that. I was just trying to explain to someone who asked why it would hurt someone’s feelings. I do realize that no one owes me any feel-goodness.

Any time anyone publicly thanks Jesus for anything, aren’t they implicitly denying the veracity of all other faiths? That’s probably offensive to the billions of, well, just about everyone else out there. What, Krishna isn’t good enough to help you win an Emmy?

Further, when the winner of any particular contest thanks Jesus for His assistance, are they not implying that everyone else involved in the competition lost because Jesus chose not to help them? Why does Jesus hate the other guy so much? If anything, acknowledging your victory had nothing to do with Jesus is the least offensive statement possible where Christians are concerned.

The best thing about insulting Jesus is that he pretty much has to forgive you…
Bob: “Hey Jesus, you suck!”
Jesus: “My son, this will not stand, ya know? This unchecked aggression will not stand, man.”
Bob: "Whoa guy, don’t get your sandals in a bunch, I’m only kidding. Forgive me?
Jesus: “Well jeez, it’s not like I have any choice…”

Epic win!
 that was hilarious
(does thinking that make me immature?)

Anything that comes out of the mouth of a celebrity accepting an award is probably bs anyway; and any credit they want to pass around is fine with me. Jesus is less offensive than their lawyer, as far as I’m concerned. And an implicit offense is probably better than an explicit one.

Oh man, don’t tell me she said it to you, too!

(Great comeback and perfect illustration of the point, BTW)

Yeah, but as far as I know, no member of my family is omnipotent and none claims to have created the universe. Had they, I’m sure Griffin’s comments wouldn’t have bothered them much, not while they’re busy creating natural disasters and killing first-borns and whatnot.

I think it’s been pretty well established that “my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, through Whom all things are possible”[sup]TM[/sup] is pretty much the only major deity that cares about things like award shows, nascar racing, and the futbol.
