Now I don’t pretend to speak for all the liberals of the world but I’m pretty sure I qualify as one so in that context let me just say
Fuck Kathy Griffin
You’re not funny - never were, this stunt was way over the line, you’re not being treated unfairly, and the same thing would have happened to a man so don’t even play that card.
Crawl back under your bridge and let the adults figure out how to get us out of this mess, m’kay?
Well, I disagree. I love KG. But I hate how she’s handling the back lash. She sounds like a crazy loon. She should have just made her apology then lay low until the next shinny thing pops up on social media.
As far as the stunt itself, it’s a big “meh” for me. Trump is a crass individual. So people doing crass things back at him doesn’t really ping my outrage meter. You get what you give.
I’ve never been a fan of Kathy Griffin, but I must say I don’t get why this particular thing is such a big deal. She posed for a provocative photograph, a “shocking” image to make herself heard above all the noise. So? Isn’t that how things are done now?
“Oh, but she crossed the line!”
What line? There are no lines anymore, have we not learned this yet? That the difference between what we decide to reward and elevate and what we revile and shame is literally based on nothing? Wasn’t the election of Dalond Tpurm the final, indisputable proof of this?
Turn her off, fire her from hosting your New Year’s Eve thing, take an artistic photograph of her being raped by a moose in effigy, or deal with it in whatever way makes you comfortable, but this “moral outrage” nonsense? Now? What universe are you living in? If you’re up in arms about this, you’re either a strategically cynical conservative trying to score points or a tragically naive Dutch boy with his finger in a papier-mâché dike. If the former, then fuck you. If the latter, my advice is to let it go. The levy is broke and the town is underwater. Pick up a bucket or something.
I assume you said the same thing about Ted Nugent when he called for hanging President Obama dozens of times and also when he called for assassinating Hillary Clinton and then you called out 45 for inviting him to the White House.
Right?
I admit what Kathy did was inappropriate, distasteful and stupid. But at least she apologized and she did not call for the actual killing of 45, unlike so many from the right, including Mr. Shit-in-my-pants, did about Obama and Clinton without apology.
I don’t really care about what she did, and I think the outrage is overblown. And I appreciate her rather good apology, especially given that she rarely if ever does that.
But whining about it afterwards is stupid, and does actually reduce my respect for her. Sure, if she’s getting death threats or something, talk about that. But never turn something where people are offended into a “poor pitiful me” story.
I’m with the OP. And yes, as a matter of fact, BigAppleBucky, I was totally disgusted by Ted Nugent and had no trouble calling him out on it.
I believe in freedom of speech and understand that what KG was doing was technically permissible. But as a strategic matter, it was terribly damaging to the cause. How can liberals claim the high ground if we are going to run around with bloody severed head effigies? C’mon guys. We’re supposed to be better than that, and “but the other side does it too” is a piss-poor argument.
Also, KG’s “ooh, poor widdle me, I’m such a victim now” is nauseating. Let me get this straight - it’s fine when YOU are shown carrying the bloodied severed head of someone you disagree with, but if anyone else responds in equally crass, threatening terms, then you are being bullied? Nuh-un. Sauce for goose, gander, and all that
Sure, if any of your detractors cross a line and do something illegal, go ahead and prosecute them. But don’t come crying to me about your plight, because I think you showed terrible judgment in the first place.
I feel no outrage about this, I just think what she did was objectively inappropriate, not helpful in any way, and I’m double annoyed that she’s playing the gender card when it’s difficult enough for women to be taken seriously about actual sexism. I think my outrage meter may have broken after all the shit that went down in 2016.
Kathy Griffith did something that even a lot of people with similar political sympathies (i.e. “liberals”) find crass, disgusting, and not funny. Some people found it even threatening. She was free to express herself, but she is not free of other people expressing their feelings about her expression.
I saw the photo first, before the backlash to it. And my first thought was “oh crap, what the hell was she thinking?” And then the backlash came, and now she’s suffering a sort of publicity Tsunami. Way overblown, but not unexpected.
I do like Griffin, with all her defects, very much.
I looked dispassionately at what happened, and I saw this:
a famous photographer, who has previously been PRAISED for doing violent images similar to this, talked Kathy into posing with the mask, as a part of a larger shoot. Much like people taking dares at a drunken party, Griffin went along with it, no doubt at the time, thinking of it as just another silly exaggerated stunt joke.
As for people like the OP, and others who SHOULD be defending Griffin for what is obviously a stupid mistake, I am seriously annoyed. If you are an opponent of Trump, or you style yourself as being on the left, or you want to pretend that you idealize freedom of expression, or even just someone who wants to think of themselves as reasonable, joining the right-wing inspired public lynching of a silly comedian is an act of reprehensible desertion of your own fantasized ideals.
It's the people heaping excessive derision and scorn and blame on her for this error, who I MOST revile.
I don’t think she should be apologizing about the head. But coming on the air with no make-up does make me re think my commitment to freedom of expression.
And why are you disappointed with the left? Many on the left have abandoned the concept of free speech years ago.
True. But she is also whining about all the criticism she’s getting, citing her First Amendment rights.
News flash: your First Amendment right to say/show something crass, vulgar and disturbing, doesn’t immunisé you from harsh criticism from others, exercising their First Amendment rights. Nor does it guarantee your job in the private sector.
To be fair, if you were receiving an avalanche of negativity it would likely be easy to blur together the respectfully critical vs. the insulting vs. the murderous. From her POV it’s just everyone suddenly hating her.
This reeks of yet another desperate cry for attention with a video link-ready public ready to broadcast and receive. Trump set the example, and the D-listers are following suit.

I hereby ask the United Nations to grant me special authority to save the United States.
Please allow me to capture Kathy Griffin, Ted Nugent and Bill Maher and deliver them to an undisclosed location (ok, somewhere in the Kerguelen Islands) where they will be forced to remain in exile with no external communications for the remainder of their days.
I promise that there is plenty of wildlife in this region for Ted to hunt and skin, as well as edible plant life. Trust me, they’ll be fine.
Ok, Ted will kill the other two and then become even more of a pants-shittingly insane person, but you won’t actually know if this happens or not.
As a servant of America and the world, I am also willing to take whatever other individuals, to a maximum of 50, they believe are necessary. However, I would ask that you provide me with $5 million dollars to ensure that they are adequately supplied with tents and other survival gear. There will be no accounting of my expenses provided.
