Katrina

It’s said that it could withstand winds of up to 200 MPH.

I just wonder if it can hold out against flooding…

I just don’t know if I can deal with a world without the French Quarter in it.

Damn, this one’s scary. I mean, when it gets to Mississippi, it’ll still be a Cat 4.

Holy Jebus.

I wonder how far a bass boat can go on a tank of gas?

All the way.
To the bottom.
Stay on land.

The superdome is the largest dome in the world. I have read that it was built to withstand winds of 200 mph. I have no idea what 30 feet of water will do to it. It seems like it could take it. I can picture the whole city of New Orleans underwater with the Superdome, housing thousands of people, sitting there like a fishing bobber with no way for anyone to get out.

I’ve been watching this - I’ve got a friend in New Orleans, but she evacuated yesterday morning. While she was going to go to another friend’s in Baton Rouge, her relatives wanted her to go further north, so she’s at their place in Arkansas. Watching this, I’m pretty glad she went there - and I hope the ones in Baton Rouge come through this ok.

I meant, if someone wasn’t able to leave until right now, might they be able to get gone faster by getting in their Ranger and heading up river rather than trying to drive I-10?

'Course, if you ran out of gas in the middle of Big Muddy with Katrina bearing down on you, your trolling motor might not be of much help.

Me? I’d’ve been in North Platte yesterday.

looks very very ill

My father has refused to evacuate; he lives in the French Quarter. Talked to him a little bit ago…HE’S NOT WORRIED. I’m guessing he thinks the hurricane’s going to move - the past ones have missed New Orleans, so this one will too.

At least I got to tell him I love him. Dammit, I don’t like thinking like this. I am aware there’s not a damned thing I can do from here, and the worry isn’t helping. It just sucks that he’s a stubborn old fart who isn’t taking this seriously.

Damn.

Call the NO Cops & have him picked up & taken to a shelter.

Better to have him alive & angry.

I’m sorry Vevila. A lifetime of near misses and failed predictions give some people false confidence that the worst case scenario won’t ever happen. Is he staying at home or is he going to one of the hotel shelters or the Superdome?

From the reports on Fox lots of folks (including a Fox news crew) are planning on riding it out in the French Quarter. At least he won’t be fending for himself if it gets really ugly.

I hope the stubborn old fart is right and this really isn’t as bad as it looks … .

Seconded. Do it. Now.

Really, we’ve been dodging this thing for a LONG time. And regarding the Dome, I would be amazed if any sort of natural disaster could take it down, the thing is built like a champ. The New Orleans Arena, however, consists of tons of glass.

good heavens, vevila! i hope he at the very least goes to one of the hotels there. up around 4 to 5 stories is his best bet right now. please keep us informed.

in other news cnn showed the dolphins again. the dr from the aquarium who is staying with them… his first name is moby! yes, dr. moby is in charge of the evacuated dolphins.

they figure that the superdome (or superhome as some are calling it) will flood. the major advantage is not many windows in the dome and even with flooding, people will be above the water.

the worst will be sanitation, bathrooms are going to be a nightmare tomorrow, and food distribution.

I’m glad that they’re confident. I keep imagining a nightmare scenario where the 200 MPH wind gusts rip the roof off the dome, and then the whole thing fills up with rainwater

Damn, this really sucks.

I’ve got friends in New Orleans who left this morning for Houston, TX, but I’ve family in New Orleans who only evacuated as far as New Iberia, LA.

They say they’re safe there, but damn if it doesn’t look like the hurricane is going right over their heads. They’re more worried about having anything to go back to.

While I was not expecting to hear from them, I have friends who live about 3 miles south of I-10 in Destrehan. They may end up with some lakefront property,

i’m a bit nervous about the roof. they haven’t mentioned it. don’t even want to think of it blowing off.

cnn said that they are running computer tests on various possiblities of the dome. i would have thought they would have done that before letting people in.

i can’t imagine trying to pack up my family, 3-4 days of food and heading to a sports area. that is a huge amount of stuff to bring for a family of 4 or more.

I hope and pray that this doesn’t fully come to fruition…the loss of life scenario for a Cat 5 direct hit on New Orleans is beyond grim.

Godspeed New Orleans (and the rest of the affected gulf coast).

My dear deluded father is staying at home. At least he won’t be alone- there are three other idiots staying with him.
