Katy Perry's E.T. vs. t.a.T.u.'s All The Things She Said

I’m not accusing Katy Perry of plagiarizing by any means. But when I heard her recent single, E.T. I could have swore that I heard it before, like almost a decade ago. It has the same pacing and beat as t.a.T.u.'s 2002 All The Things She Said.

Am I just hearing things and making the leap, or is it really that similar?

Wow, the similarity is really strong. The chorus is so similar that I’d have thought it was a cover. That part’s just different enough to not be plagiarism, but only just.

I unabashedly love the Tatu song and a couple of their others.

I thought this thread was going to be about generating a marketing buzz with faux-Lesbianism.

It’s not just you - I was thinking the exact same thing last week.

Can’t really hear it myself. They sound quite different to me.

And thanks for getting me to listen to a Katy Perry song. Bah.

Damn you… now I’m imagining Katy Perry in the “outfits” that the t.a.t.u. girls wore. And I’m at work.

Here’s the two songs mixed together:

BTW, I prefer the orginal Russian version of the Tatu song: Ya Soshla S Uma

Ahh, so someone else apparently thought as I did, and even went to trouble of mashing them together.

If “pacing and beat” were grounds for a lawsuit, all of these bands would be suing each other forever.

The melody is quite similar, too. The Katy Perry song, in my opinion, is no doubt influenced by the t.a.T.u tune. Now, whether this was intentional or just subconscious “synthesizing of pop music culture” I can’t say. I find when I compose stuff, I very often have bits and pieces of other songs infect my work that I didn’t even know I had heard before. I tend to give the benefit of a doubt to the songwriter.

Katy Perry’s E.T. that can be viewed outside of the US.

So, did Katy Perry give any recognition to t.a.T.u. on her album? Recording fortunes have been lost for less similarity than that.

And I just realized: it’s actually t.A.T.u.
