IMO, if someone needs ‘fighting for’, presumably to defend and try to uphold them, across a period of three decades, in the majority of cases, it’s an indicator that they are not actually worth defending.

Oh, there are a few exceptions where an innocent (or maybe not-innocent-but-justified) idealist is victimised for a very long time, but I sort of feel like this aint that.
