Kerbal playing 'dopers, help with mods?

I just started playing Kerbal again after a hiatus of 6 months since they recently put in both the 64 bit version of the game and added career (I realize that ‘recently’ isn’t really the case since I think it’s been a month or so now). Anyway, I’m looking for some stable mod help. I have the latest version of MechJeb which I think is such a necessary standard that it should be part of the game, but what I’d like is something like the sat mapping tool for biome discovery and a tool to show launch windows for the various planets. I can’t remember what tools I used for those in the past since I uninstalled Kerbal and reinstalled it on a new machine recently, and I don’t know what works well with MechJeb and the current version, so hoping 'dopers who are playing the game could toss me some links to try out.

Any other mod suggestions or discussion about Kerbal is also welcome. This is still one of my all time favorite games, and I’m enjoying doing the career mode and scientific discovery again. There is just something about building rockets and flying them to the various moons, planets and asteroids that is just a hell of a lot of fun (and even with MechJeb it’s still minutes or hours of boredom punctuated by a few seconds of terror trying to nail a landing on some of the moons/planets with limited fuel and extremely small margins for error :)).

I can’t even seem to install MechJeb correctly atm.

There is an issue with old .dll files. What you should do is delete the entire MechJeb folder from your /gamedata folder, then unpack the latest zip file of the mod…that should fix the issue. Here’s the link to the latest one afaik.

Hmmm. The pod is there but I do not get the MechJeb interface when I am ready to launch.

MechJeb only shows up in sandbox mode right off the bat. Otherwise you need to buy the functionality through the tech tree.

I am in sandbox mode. I think I am going to uninstall and re-install everything and see if that helps.

When updating mods it’s almost always best to delete the old mod folder before unzipping the new one.

If you’re only using MechJeb for the information displays and not the autopilot, Kerbal Engineer Redux and VOID both work pretty well.

Grrr. What is the path for the items from MechJeb supposed to be? Now I am not even getting anything.

I downloaded and unzipped it but I guess I put the MechJeb folder in the wrong place. Do the files within the MechJeb folder go anywhere special? I swear I did not have any issues when I first installed it on my old computer

Not sure what OS you have, or if you are using Steam, but it’s in the Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\GameData directory on mine. Simply unzip your mod in that GameData directory and it should work fine.

Thank you so much. I feel like a fool for having such a hard time with it.

What is a good equipment mod pack? I’d like to get some fairings, I used to have some on my old machine but forget what I downloaded for them.

I don’t usually go for the part mods so much. The only one I’ve tried this time around is Kerbal Attachment System. The mods I currently have working are MechJeb, Kerbal Alarm Clock and SatMap (as well as a mod who’s name escape me atm but that you can use to convert hydrogen and oxygen to electricity via a fuel cell…haven’t used this much outside of an experimental rover design).

I really wish Steam would do a Kerbal Workshop for vetted mods to the game.

Yes.

KW Rocketry is my go-to parts mod. Includes engines, tanks, and fairings. The engines are comparable in performance to stock, but just different enough to be worth using. They’re also generally prettier. The fairings are easy to use and come in many sizes.

Procedural Fairings is another popular fairing mod, which as its name suggests will make a fairing to fit your situation rather than being fixed sizes.

B9 Aerospace is a great parts mod focused on spaceplane parts, but development stopped on it sometime around .22, and it doesn’t work without community patches. It’s recently been restarted, but the new version is apparently still buggy.

If you want spaceplane parts that work, Spaceplane Plus (think I have that right) is a smaller pack of very nice parts that combine well with stock - so well that it’s getting added almost unchanged to .25.

I was just upgraded to version 0.25. Most of the mods and add ons seem to work. Mechjeb does not work with the new version.

I’m not sure why we need a new thread for Kerbal Space Program, but in any case a Mechjeb version compatible with 0.25 is out.

That’s the version I just installed, and while I get the MechJeb pod and AR202, when I attach the AR202 to my command pod and then go out to the launch pad, I don’t get the button to activate MechJeb.

I assume it’s in the right spot in my directory, as the pod and AR202 are in the game (Kerbal Space Program/GameData/MechJeb2). Am I missing something?

Problem Solved: apparently there’s a bug where MechJeb doesn’t always activate if KSP is installed in C:\Program Files (x86). Moving the folder to C:\ fixed it.
