I’ve seen it a few times, and even defended Spacey’s character when people criticised him for obsessing over a high school girl once or twice, but I didn’t have any particular plans to see it in the immediate future.
Kevin Spacey is a GREAT actor. This is most unfortunate,
Spacey replaced by Christopher Plummer in All The Money In The World.
That’s a real shocker. The movie was finished and ready for release. I can’t recall something like this happening before. I can understand why Ridley Scott did it, worries about the chilling effect of Spacey’s presence, but I don’t think this will help the film. Plummer’s a good actor but he’s not a great actor as Spacey undoubtedly is so this won’t resurrect the movie’s Oscar hopes. I hope that some time down the line we’ll get to see the version with Spacey as his performance is said to be incredible.
I can see Spacey starring with OJ Simpson and Bill Cosby in a film entitled “The Three Pariahs”.
As an actor, he’s done. Being gay no longer matters in Hollywood but being a sexual predator does. The account of buying that young man drinks and putting his hand inside his pants at the bar was pretty terrifying. I hope he can be charged with something at some point.
Spacey is seeking treatment. Thank god he’ll be okay.
I think that horse left the barn, moved 3 states over, and married its first cousin.
Or his own brother.
Well, that’s a horse of a different color.
I could easily see Plummer doing a good job with the role, although perhaps in my mind it helps that he’s closer to the age of the character than Spacey is. The only question is whether the reshoots will be smooth or if it will be obvious.
I’d say Plummer is a better actor, your “undoubtedly” being highly arbitrary. Spacey is a terrific actor, no doubt, but I can certainly name a lot more bad performances by him (K-Pax, The Shipping News, Pay It Forward, The United States of Leland, Beyond the Sea, The Life of David Gale) than I can by Plummer. Make no mistake, when he’s good, he’s very very good. But what I’ve found is that he’s usually at his best when he’s in a movie that’s already excellent. He’s a collaborator so feeds off the energy of other talented people and that can often reveal some really stunning results, but I don’t think that makes him better.
Plummer is an old-school craftsman and I’m really hard-pressed to think of many performances of his that weren’t completely authentic and lived-in. They aren’t always in good movies and unlike Spacey, he’s mostly been in supporting parts for the last four decades, but he’s the real deal and a highly reliable and believable character actor. The biggest millstone around his neck is the legacy of the only movie most people know from early in his career, but even now if you re-examine Captain Von Trapp, he provides the vital understatement that movie is otherwise sorely lacking.
And I’ll admit that having seen the trailer several times recently, Spacey looked like he was delivering a “make-up performance”, where he’s very self-consciously done up to look like someone else. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (a trailer can be a misleading indicator), but it’s not something I think when I see Gary Oldman in the Darkest Hour trailer, for example. He looks like a real character, not just a stagy version of Oldman. So my interest in Scott’s film has risen with this change.
I know this is off-topic but Plummer must’ve been in some desperate financial straits or had a bad drinking problem when he did that movie. It’s one thing to be featured in a big-budget knock-off of Star Wars but this looked like it was meant to be aired on Saturday morning TV. It made me wonder how much of the film’s budget was left after they paid Plummer.
BTW, that movie, All The Money In The World, already had an actor in the role of John Paul Getty III (the kidnap victim) named Charlie Plummer, who is apparently unrelated to Christopher Plummer, in the role of John Paul Getty (the billionaire grandfather who was reluctant to ransom his grandson, until the grandson’s ear was sent in).
If only there was a powerful studio executive who understood the suffering they’re going through…
Oh, right.
It’s a shocker to me in that I didn’t realize Christopher Plummer was still alive and acting.
I disagree, and so does Ridley Scott. Plummer was his first choice but the studio pressured him into getting a “bigger name”, and that’s how Spacey ended up with the part. And kudos to Scott for making this move.
He won an Academy Award in 2012 for Beginners. He was 82 then, the oldest actor to receive an Oscar.
15th man. I wonder how big the number will end up at.
I have not been able to watch “This Is Spinal Tap” since Tony Hendra’s daughter made very credible accusations that he molested her.
Hendra played Ian Faith, the cricket bat-wielding manager.
