Can the sheer weight of a keychain pull an electrical connection inside an ignition switch apart? My Mom says someone who knows about cars claims a key chain like mine, with several keys and heavy fobs on it, can pull something apart inside a switch by the mere pull of gravity.
It’s not an electrical connection in the switch proper that would be affected, but mechanisms inside the lock cylinder, which is what the key goes into. Heavy things hanging on keys can and do damage ignition lock cylinders.
Years ago, my mother bought a new car, and when the dealer saw her keys, he recommended that she not put the ignition key on that ring. Smart suggestion.
She’s an opera fan, and her keys sport a life-size brass replica of a ticket to (IIRC) Aida at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The “ticket” itself weighs about a quarter pound, plus all the other keys she’s got.
Compare this to my car keys - just the ignition/door key and the alarm remote. I wouldn’t want more than that in my pocket, anyway.
