KGUD on your AM dial

I’m looking for a new car radio that gets excellent AM reception. Don’t care about FM, CD, HD or MP3-just good AM. Something along the lines of the old Pioneer Supertuner series would be nice.

I’m afraid that you might find that the AM tuners in most modern car stereos are junk, and probably supplied from the same manufacturer…

Might be better off just installing a better antenna.

I don’t know if they’re still any good for your purpose, but Pioneer still makes Supertuners - Something like their DEH-P400UB incorporates what they’ve named Supertuner IID. Only one review of it so far, but the reviewer does mention the tuner portion and its sound quality.

These days, old-fashioned AM or FM radio is about as much as an afterthought as 8-track tape. Everyone’s all about the iPod connection and satellite radio now. It’s almost as if manufacturers assume only poor people listen to the radio now.

I know the old Becker and Blaupunkts can be completely restored to as new condition.

They were good radios.

I might be willing to try out that model, if the extensive description provided even mentioned AM or FM reception at all.

You can get AM stations in HD, if they’re available in your area. They sound pretty damn good, too.

Minor note:

If you’re driving outside the States, nowhere else in the world uses HD Radio. Not even Canada or Mexico. Though there are rumours about Canada allowing it in.
