I saw in another thread a mention of someone who was banned. I was wondering what offenses can get you banned from the boards (npo I am not planning on doing any of them or even skirting it) but I thought about trolling…are there others?
You might want to ask this in, “About the Message Boards”
Also you might want to check out the Posting FAQ and the registration agreement. Portions of both pertain to your question.
Better to ask this question by email to a mod.
Most people that I’ve seen banned have just been people who consistently caused problems, or who were obvious trolls or sockpuppets. I’ve seen countless posters who registered, started several racist or otherwise inflammatory threads, and then either just left, or were banned. Similarly, sockpuppets (when an existing user creates a second account, for whatever reason) are discovered from time to time, and these tend to be banned. There are specific, unique cases that some might be able to relate to you, but I’d say most bans come from trolling or socking.

A few things which have gotten people kicked off in the past:
Continuing to do something after being warned to stop by a Moderator.
Violating copyrights.
Posting links to porn sites.
Trying to hack the site.
Sock puppeting (ie posting under more than one username).
Threatening legal action against the site or another member.
Threatening violence against the site or another member.
Seeking or posting information on how to commit illegal acts.
Trolling by posting false information about yourself.
-spamming/advertising
Basically, you can get banned for anything contrary to the SDMB registration agreement or for many of the items in the guidelines for posting at the SDMB, both of which can be found as sticky threads in ATMB. For some things, like insults and plagiarism, you usually get at least one warning first. Other things, like spamming or sock puppetry usually result in instant banning.
This is more of an ATMB sort of thing that GQ, but this sort of thread seems to attract the wrong sort of attention, so I’ll close it rather than move it. If you have further questions, e-mail me or another staffer.
