Getting BANNED

What does it take for someone to get banned from the SDMB?
I’ve noticed that most behavior, however distasteful, is tolerated. I ain’t fer it or agin it. Just curious.

Pissing me off generally does it. Also, failure to give me my proper tribute of chocolate. Wait, I’m repeating myself.

Seriously, now…if I notice someone who, on his first or second post, is advertising, that person gets banned without a warning. Messing with the server in any way will also get your posting privileges revoked so fast that you won’t know what happened. Threatening the continued existence of the Straight Dope (anything from a threat of a lawsuit to a threat of mailbombing) also gets your privileges yanked. If I notice that you’ve registered twice(or more) I’ll generally remove privileges from all names, and then write to you asking which one you want restored. If you give an invalid email address after the registration process is complete*, and we have to write to you and notice that your email bounces, we pull privileges. If you later write to us in a respectful manner and give us a good explanation, we may restore privileges. Using “Hey, Dumbass!” as the subject of the letter is not considered respectful. Believe it or not, something very similar occurred.

Usually, a poster who has been a while and isn’t doing one of the above things will get warnings before being banned. While it may SEEM that we ban a lot of people without warning, actually it’s only a few people who keep coming back, using different names. We have had to warn a few people repeatedly, and then ban them, but that’s pretty rare.

I’m pretty sure that doing a search on this subject will turn up more threads.

*The registration requires a valid email, otherwise, you won’t get the email confirmation.

Thanks for the info. If I were to find myself in a position
that required bribery, where do I mail the chocolate?

Well, Lynn, if it’s any help, I frequently eat chocolate in your honor.
