Kicked Off Snopes...and the Internet

Every time I access Snopes website and then click on the Message Board or What’s New, I get an error message and I’m kicked off the Internet…!

Has this happened to anyone else? What’s going on?

I emailed Snopes but haven’t received anything back yet. (I haven’t done anything to piss them off, by the way).

Sounds like some kind of hoax or urban legend to me. There’s a website that deals with this kind of thing, but I can’t remember what it’s called at the moment.

There is something strange about Snopes, no doubt. I’ve never had any problems at home, but if I spent too much time there at work, the Blue Screen of Death would follow.

Do not attmept to adjust your internet connection, Snopes has taken control. You are now entereing the Snopes Zone.

I have heard of such complaints, but do not have them happen to me. When I heard about them at first, I thought some pop-ups I had (even with my blocker) where from Snopes. After I surfed to the page in isolation, I found that the pop-ups come from another site in my daily routine. (I have tabbed browsing)

I get blue-screened as well, on my work computer. Doesn’t happen with the message board, but definitely if I’m browsing through the items in “What’s New?”

We run some version of Windows NT here, so I assumed that one of the many scripts or pop-ups on a Snopes page was not agreeing with the OS. Wouldn’t be the first time - Windows crashes whenever I insert a floppy disk, so it must be finicky.

There are a number of strange scripts running on the Snopes website. Trying to access their site from work with IE frequently causes my machine to crash. At home my machine is set up to bar the Snopes site from running any scripts or apps, and it seems to run fine.

At one time i was debugging some scripts as a tester of a new site. I had the script bug logging turned on for IE. It would go nuts when i hit snopes. Nearly every page had dozens of scripting bugs. It wouldn’t let me see the script but i would get warning pop ups of scripting errors. sometimes so bad that I had to use the Program Manager to shut down IE.

So basically Snopes is haunted.

Hm. Not only has the net become self-aware, it has developed a keen sense of irony.

I get a little pop-up in the lower right hand corner of my screen when I visit Snopes, and occasionally my browser will crash shortly after. What’s really annoying me is Snopes keeps triggering my work’s adult filter, for no immediately apparent reason; the link about the picture of a jet’s engine on fire mid-air triggers it, and it says the reason is Mature/Nudity.

Are there naked people clinging to the wing? But several of the links trigger the same filter, but others don’t. Haven’t figured that out yet.

Suppose if you are running any version 5.0.x of IE and above you could add snopes.com to the restricted sites list - by launching Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options - Select the Security Tab, Click on the Restricted Sites Icon, click on the sites button, and adding www.snopes.com

That should restrict what controls can be run from the page and may cut down on the problems.

Oh, and there is at least ONE dirty picture at snopes - if you go to Disney, then Disney Films - look for the movie the Rescuers - there’s a nekkid lady in one of the windows…

see

The Rescuers

And, ironically enough, that one I can link to just fine.

Go figure.
