Kid Nation? Yeah, Like That's A Good Idea

But they’re already getting paid for their work, and realistically too. Management gets 20 times more than the laborers.

I’m in! We’ll see how the money changes things. I see a greedy glint in the eye of Greg(?) but how he goes about gaining the groundswell going’ll be interesting.
As for the four hand-picked council members, the host did mention that they aren’t on the council for the whole show. (And from the previews it looks like they might not make it through the second show) I think they were chosen for being four cross sections of four different categories (age, race, geography(home), and gender)

And lastly, the scripted feel of the show? I would describe it more as structure than script. That they are set up into four groups doesn’t bother me. That they have competitions doesn’t bother me. That the general store/saloon is full and no one stocked the shelves doesn’t bother me (yet). I still get a sense that they are kids doing what kids would do (rabbit hunting ,“This is a MAN’s world girls!” hehe). The emotions are real; the frustrations, the elations, the bickering, the taunting. hmm, rambling, my $.02 I guess.

I guess my questions are about what the goal is. Hopefully the next episode will have more ‘town challenges’ (not competitions) like the cooking, organization and toilet issues this week.

I tried. There are way too many kids for me to keep track of who is who. I have trouble with 12 or 16, forget 40. It is not looking so bad, though. I will persist and see if it grows on me.

Which is subsequently used to pay for stuff in the store & saloon.

That $20K better be earmarked for college.

Well we weren’t introduced to all 40 kids and we rarely saw that many of the kids together. Not even at meals did it seem like all 40 were present. There will be 10 kids top that we need to track. Jimmy already left so now we’ll have more time for a new kid.
I love that really awkward kid who made the joke about MLK having a dream and the pancakes.

I would have preferred they not reveal that the Gold Stars actually translate to cash outside of the town. Imagine their faces when at the end of the show when they revealed that- where concievably a kid could have won multiple stars.

I like Sophia but I could see her getting really annoying.

The Kid and I enjoyed it. I asked if she’d ever want to do a show like that - Uh NO! Even if you can win money? Uh NO!

That Mike stood up to Greg was super impressive - Greg was very intimidating. Before the show started The Kid was all drooly over Greg. Halfway through the show she told me I was right (!!) in that his “cuteness” was greatly diminished by his asshattedness. I’m sure Mike will end up being relieved from Council fairly soon, but that kid has his stuff together.

Now she’s all googley eyed over Michael, the kid who diffused the yelling after Greg and his henchdweeb stomped out of the meeting.

I also read all the stuff, including the waiver, and didn’t think I’d enjoy it much. Having a daughter who is in that age group and her having friends in every darned social strata made it interesting.

FWIW, my daughter is very Sophia like. When Sophia was sitting on the rock yakking like 90? I looked at The Kid and smirked. “Oh hush up Mom”.

Regarding the “Gold Star” - Greg commented on how NOW he will participate as he wants one. Kinda jerky, but isn’t real life somewhat similar? We know if we do a super job we may get a raise or whatever? I really don’t have an issue with it.

Pam they were getting paid but that money was to buy stuff. Did you check out all that candy and soda, I was thinking to myself I hope they have toothbrushes because if they buy all that candy they are going to need one fast! But really I am sure they will learn soon that the money they make will not go far on luxury things. So I am sure this will teach them quickly that you have to budget your money!

Skywatcher the gold star was for her and her parents to figure out how it should be used. The first thing I thought was I hope they put that away for college. Although, she seemed like a very smart girl that might be able to get her a good scholarship.

I am happy to see other people enjoyed the show as much as I did. Its fun to see these kids handle stressful/difficult situations better than some adults I know. I know their parents are proud of them, because I know I was.
