Kids Baking Championship

We stumbled across this show when they were running a marathon on MLK Day and immediately fell in love. The children are so talented and cute and it’s so lovely when they rush to help each other. One little girl forgot to make her whipped cream with eight minutes left, so another boy ran over to help her. A couple had kitchen mishaps (burned finger, spilling hot butter on a knee) and the others rushed over to help them finish in time.

How they make these baked goods with no recipe astounds me. I didn’t even know what a pat a choux or a macaron was, but these kids know enough to jump up and down in glee or groan in despair when they have to use that technique.

For season 6, I’m rooting for little Madison. She’s a cute little bespectacled girl who can blow you away with her peanut butter chocolate cake.

We haven’t been watching it regularly, but we have caught some episodes. We enjoy it, the kids are talented, creative, and cute. It’s a good show for us all to chill out and watch together.

Binge-watched a couple of prior seasons when I was sick with the flu. Loved the kids–their earnestness and innocence combined with some solid baking skills. Best part for me was how Duff and Valerie were simultaneously supportive and tough in their expectations.

She’s one tough cookie.

Top Chef Jr was likewise good fun!

I don’t know how Duff and Val do it, when they have to send one of those babies home. I’d be a blubbering mess.

I just started watching this too! I got hooked when I came across last season’s episodes that were being shown back to back on a horribly cold day. I’m now watching the current season. I too love little Madison. I am astounded at what these kids know how to do; lemon curd, homemade marmalade, shortbread crusts, etc. And you’re right - no recipe cards that I can see! I wouldn’t even be able to come up with an idea! When they’re given their challenge, I think OMG, what would I do?

I’ve also gotten myself hooked on the Great British Baking Show! I don’t even like to bake, but there’s something about it - I can’t stop watching!

Well, little Madison is gone.

She seemed off her game the last two episodes. She won the Opposites Attract episode, where the contestants were paired up and had to make opposite halves of a cake, but she seemed steamrolled by her partner, Jaxon and didn’t stand up for herself. I wonder if that put her off the competition. Meadow was also bossed around a bit by Karthick in that episode too, but she pushed back more.

I swear, if Paige keeps opening the oven door to check her baking I’m going to scream. She did it last episode too.

Davis seems quite the talented baker, eager to learn from his mistakes.

I’d love to know the behind the scenes…do they film the episodes over the course of a couple of weeks? I know their parents are there…Paige was comforted by her mother when she burned her knee with butter last week.

Anything like Gordon Ramsay’s Masterchef Junior? Seventh season coming up this year.

Tuesdays at 8 (Eastern/Pacific), starting March 12

Well, we’re down to the final three, Davis, Paige, and Meadow.

I have an issue with Davis winning the last two times (the faux taco and the sugar cookie puzzle.) Granted, he is quite talented at decorating and presentation (the kid did a frigging Mona Lisa for his puzzle, for Og’s sake) but both times Val and Duff had issues with how the food tasted.

So, are they going for presentation or taste? They both adored Meadow’s cinnamon spice sugar cookie but had issues with the design. Paige’s buttercream frosting melted a bit and Davis’s cookie was not quite done. Last week his faux taco was not the top taste either…I think that was Meadow again.

It always kills me with one of the kids start crying because something isn’t working right. This week Jaxon was having issues with his puzzle pieces breaking and last week little Nyah couldn’t get her faux taco to work (she ended up being eliminated.)

It will be interesting to see if Val and Duff judge the finale on both presentation AND taste, because it doesn’t look like they’ve been doing that the last couple of weeks.

I’m rooting for Paige or Meadow, they’re both from my home state. Go Minnesota girls!

I thought the same thing - they said Davis’ cookie was underdone, that should have eliminated him from being the star baker.

I feel terrible when something goes awry and they start crying. What a helpless feeling they must have. But they all have such big personalities and seem to bounce right back. They’re in their element and handle all of it better than I would! I’d be curled up in a corner with a bowl on my head.

Paige won, with a chocolate cake with cherries, marscapone cream, and crushed chocolate covered pretzels. Her decorating could have been a bit better (her middle tier was oddly bare, her fondant chess pieces too small) but her cake must have been delicious. It looked delicious.

Davis’s cake was leaning and had no taste of cherries, the twist ingredient. Meadow’s cake was a bit on the dry side and although it was lemon ginger, had no taste of ginger.

All these kids amaze me with their talent, creativity, and knowledge. Paige actually forgot the chocolate covered pretzels, but smashed them up and added them to her cherry filling. Meadow made her own fondant, and Davis went big with a very tall cake.

I would love a Where Are They Now in about ten years.
