Kids got a wii for xmas - help with remote sync tomfoolery??

OK, so we got the kids a wii for Christmas (I don’t play it, so am not too familiar with it yet) and we seem to have some issues with syncing the remotes (wii-motes?) The un-helpful instruction manual, large tho it be, has 20 pages on creating your own cute “mii” character, and not much on practical matters, it seems. The one page on remotes wasn’t very helpful. Web searches didn’t help much either (so far).

So once again, I turn to the kindly and wise netizens of the SDMB to fight my considerable ignorance here. We have two remotes; black and white, for ease of use. Mostly the kids just use the one, playing alone. But the second one seems to need to be re-synced every time we turn on the console or change batteries, and it doesn’t do so willingly.

So… idiot-proof the process for me, please, for TWO remotes.
Seriously, like this dumbed down:
1)turn off the console.
2)press button ‘A’.
3)turn on the console. & etc…

We’ll be forever in your debt, and in keeping with the board mission statement, ignorance will be fought.

Thanks in advance for any help!

(Apologies for seeming so dense, but back in my day, you just plugged in the game, plugged in the controllers, and played until your eyes bled. I can work with pivot tables in excel, but can’t seem to handle these stupid remotes without wanting to plant my head in the sheetrock. Grrrr…)

Well, you’ve come to the right place–I used to work for Nintendo as a customer service Representative. Anyways, there’s a few things you need to do:

[ol]
[li]Turn on Wii[/li][li] Flip open the little flap door on the Wii below the disc slot[/li][li] Press the tiny red button inside (make sure the Wii is still on the main menu)[/li][li] Take off the battery cover on the Wii Remote you want to sync and press the little red button inside there too (make sure to do this right after pressing the one on the Wii itself.)[/li][li]The lights on Wii Remote will blink for a few seconds–if they turn steady: Success! If they turn off, try again. Repeat steps for additional controllers.[/li][/ol]
If you already have one controller synced, there is another option: Press the “Home” button (the middle button with the little picture of a house) to bring up an option menu. Point and click on “Wii Remote Settings” then click on “Sync controllers” (or something along those lines). All of the controllers will now be unsynced (don’t worry!). Now press the buttons 1 and 2 at the same time on each controller–they should all connect, one after another. Note that while this is quicker, it’s also temporary, as any controllers synced in this way may have to be resynced again the next time, so it’s handy if a friend brings theirs over, but if its your own, the above method is best.

Did that help?

Well, it helped me - I’ve been using the temporary method described every time we wanted to play multiplayer. For three years.

Thanks very much.

Helped me too, Thanks

No problem! Glad it helped some people =)

@Larry Mudd–I’m pretty sure I would have thrown my Wii out a window if I did that for 3 years!

Heh. We pretty much take turns most of the time anyway - but we’ve recently got a few new titles that lend themselves to simultaneous play so this will help a lot. Also, got a bunch of few wii zapper titles and this will make it easier to mostly leave one of the controllers in the gun and just pick up whichever one makes sense at any given time, without swapping out the one that was properly synced.
