It’s around 68 degrees right now and there seems to be little humidity. Yet there is a thick haze everywhere. There’s also a weird peat-fire like smell to the air. This isn’t just where I live, either. I just got back from a trip a town over and it’s like it there, too.
I don’t think I ever noticed a hazy day when it wasn’t in the 80s or higher. And that burnt peat smell is odd. I suppose the smell could be from fireworks, yet I don’t recall hearing that many last night. Also, why would I smell it everywhere? Strange.
Oh, that’s what it is! We’ve got it here too in Vermont. My wife said she saw some people having bonfires down by the river, so we assumed that was it. I guess not. Good - I was starting to wonder if I was getting cataracts.
Yeah, it was really bad this morning. When I woke up, I thought my neighbors were burning leaves or something (which is odd, because I don’t live out in a rural area where this is common…and I’m pretty sure the HOA for my neighborhood prohibits that (I just rent, so I don’t know the HOA details, but just knowing what I know about them in general, they tend to be against any kind of fire.))
Then I went outside and noticed the haze, and assumed there was a large forest fire nearby. I then found out it was smoke blown south from fires in Quebec.
This freaked us out last night. We were climbing into bed and I smelled the smoke and asked my husband whether I was imagining it. He got up and went out onto the balcony and reported that the park across the street was nearly hidden by the smoke outside in a very creepy haze. We couldn’t see or hear any fire trucks, which is unusual given how close we are to major roads and a fire station, but figured there must have been a large fire on the other side of the park or a few streets away that we just couldn’t see.
It wasn’t until this morning that we found out it was from the fires up north.
