Kindle updates are getting harder.

Just updated mom’s Paperwhite. I wasted an hour trying to dl and apply the 1st gen update. I’d copy it to the Kindle and “update kindle” would be grayed out. Even worse, the bin file would be gone. Copied it again. Same thing. I even dl the file again and copied it to the Kindle. No update.

So then I thought, maybe she has the 2nd Gen Paperwhite? Different update. Different download. That worked.

Theres really no way to tell a 1st gen or 2nd gen Paperwhite apart. Device Info shows the software version. but they both have 5.4.x (2nd gen’ current software is 5.4.3, 1st gen is 5.4.4)

You really should get a sharpie and write on the back, 1st g or 2nd g I bet next year there will be a 3rd gen.

Can’t it update itself if you leave the WiFi on?

Yes, with Wi-fi enabled Kindle updates itself.

Mom doesn’t have wi-fi. She’s got Suddenlink a phone/cable modem thing. She gets a fast connection. They’d charge more per month for wireless.

She gets her books through the Kindle’s 3G. Updates have to be dl to her pc and copied to the Kindle. I’ve only had to do it twice in almost 2 years. Not a big deal.
