This weekend is the 36th Annual World Championship Great Arcata to Ferndale Cross Country Kinetic Sculpture Race.
My husband and I recently moved to the North Coast of California, a funky and individualist place to say the least.
Tiring of city life several years ago, we searched high and low, near and far for a place to raise our family. Fatigued, discouraged and despairing of ever finding the right place for us, we drove up here from San Francisco for the weekend. As we pulled into downtown a giant rooster rolled past us, leaving us rubbing our eyes and questioning our sanity. Then the chicken was followed by something that looked remarkably like a purple warthog, only with centipede legs.
We had stumbled across the Kinetic Sculpture Race; that moment sealed our fate and we knew we had found home. And so this race will always hold a special place in my heart and is the real reason I live here…so I’ll always know there is a chance, however slight, of seeing a giant chicken roll by my front window.
