Assuming that there is such a story, I could see it being based on May Day where, rumor has it, everyone would essentially head out into the hills and have sex. I believe there may have been some amount of chasing involved, but more like tag than hunting.
Looking through the page of May Day on the Wikipedia, Charles IX is specifically mentioned in relation to the holiday, and under his page it’s noted that he wrote a book on hunting. Possibly these things all got mixed up into one?
One could say that about all sorts of crazy things that chicks do. Get a large enough population and you can find someone for just about anything.
