This is almost too mundane and pointless to post. But…
My friends and I went up to Vancouver yesterday. No plan, just hanging out. Since nobody had any idea what we wanted to do (‘Hey, let’s go to Vancouver and have fun!’) I just parked at a car park on Burrell at Robeson and we started walking. Popped into a pub (I think it was called The Railroad – my friends had been there before, but I hadn’t) for Irish coffee because it was a bit chilly. After quite a bit more ‘wandering aimlessly’ we ended up at Kimono for sushi. (So much for my Atkin-esque diet! Jameson’s in my coffee, rice on my three pieces of sushi, a small bowl of rice, the tempura batter… and a bottle of hot sake.) We’d already looped around to The Blarney Stone, but it wasn’t open yet. We made our way back to Gastown and it was still closed. The guys stopped into a new place on the corner (which had been opened only eight days before) and had a beer.
The Blarney Stone is across the street and half way up the block. Still closed. More walking. I was a bit depressed because I’m technically unemployed and the film we’re working on has stalled pending other business. Once again we made our way back to The Blarney Stone. Still it was closed. We hung out on the corner wondering what we wanted to do when their doors opened round seven.
Amazingly, the staff remembered us from the last time. (‘You’re Shutterdog Media, aren’t you?’) I guess I was bringing my friend down; so while The Actor went out for a smoke The Director and I had a chat. We decided to put the business in my name and have a fresh start. We’ll start advertising, even though we get plenty of clients through word-of-mouth. I’ll take most of the day-to-day load, while my partner concentrates on getting the film back on track and doing most of the editing. (I’ll do the rough edits until I become more proficient.) I’ll have actual duties that will occupy me every day, instead of just coming in for gigs. We may hire someone as an independent contractor to do editing. We might end up (at least we’re aiming for) getting other people to do the work while we just run the business. This cheered me up. Time for drinks.
Recorded music was blaring and there seemed to be a large lesbian contingent in the pub last night. Nearly a dozen girls dancing together rather provocatively. Eventually mixed couples started dancing too. There’s a house band (Killarney) who has been playing the same set for 22 years. I don’t remember whether it was while they were playing, or just before they started. I think it was just before. I had just seated myself after having been standing, when a girl came up from behind me and kissed me on the cheek. Then she danced away with some guy. My friends were impressed. I thought maybe they had put her up to it, but they denied it. Anyway, we’d been together the whole time and I never saw them talking to her.
I wonder why she did it?
Anyway, this is a totally pointless story. But I don’t get kissed by strangers every day.

(Erm… Just didn’t make any follow-up calls.)
