KittenPants is having kittens! Right now!

My beautiful little KittenPants (her real name) is having kittens as I type! I’m so excited! The first one has already come out, and it’s the cutest little kitten I’ve ever seen. sigh I love my kitties!

Any kitten-bearing advice from you guys? It’s her first litter, and mine, and I’m bouncing off the walls.

I’ve done this, and my advice is leave them alone. Watch from a safe distance, and be ready to call the vet if the mother gets distressed. And try not to be grossed out as the mom eats the placenta & the little kitten-bags & stuff.

Take pictures. And start a “Help name my new kittens” thread.

Just keep an eye on her, and if she actively strains for more than 20 minutes without producing a kitten, take her to the vet. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, go directly to the vet. Prompt medical intervention can save not only kitten, but also the mother.

Otherwise, though, leave her alone. She knows what she’s doing better than you do.

I used to raise Siamese kittens…I think I went through this about 30 times. It is so wonderful, and I am enjoying it vicariously with you.

The only thing I would say that hasn’t already been said is that you should kind of keep an eye on things when the kitten is first out…mom will clean the kitten, but if she doesn’t happen to get to the mouth area fast enough, the kitten might not be able to breathe. So just kind of pay attention and if it looks like that is happening all you need to do is gently pull the placenta off the mouth and break it. Mom will take it from there.

Hooray! Thanks for all your help. Mommy kitten is enjoying her two new babies very much. One is grey with black stripes and the other is black with white feet and a white chest. They are the cutest kittens in the entire world.

Pictures! We need pictures!!! Lots of pictures!

Mommy might very well take it into her head that she needs to move her babies, so you need to keep an eye on that. It might not be TODAY, but we had one cat who would try to move her kittens every couple of days.

Handle each kitten at least 15 minutes each day, slowly adding some time as they get older. This way, they will become socialized for humans, and will be loving pets.

Mommy should be eating kitten food (and should have been eating it since you knew she was preggers), because making milk is very hard work. But don’t give her milk, most adult cats don’t have the enzyme to digest it. If she doesn’t have enough milk for the kittens (which is very unlikely) and you must supplement their feedings, get KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) which is available at pet stores. You probably won’t have to worry about this at all, though. Most cats manage to raise kittens just fine without human help.

Fuss over the kittens, but fuss over Mommy, too. She deserves it.

Kittens! Yay!

And from the sound of things, you’re a very loving cat-person, but I just thought I’d chime in - you’re feeding your cat(s) good food, right? Vets have always recommended Max Cat to me, and that’s what my cats have always had (from the kitten food to the big-kitty food). It’s very important that your kitties get nutritious food, especially when they’re just cute little baby kittens.

Congratulations to the whole Pants clan!

Oh yeah…what Lynn said.

I always spent a lot of time holding each kitten…and when they got a bit older and could get around by themselves, I’d sit on the floor a few hours a day and let them crawl all over me and curl up on my lap. (One time I had two cats with litters at the same time, and we had14 kittens two weeks apart. You haven’t lived until you have 14 kittens fighting over where each one gets to sleep on a TV watching gramma. ) This makes it so much easier for the babies to bond with their new parents.

The moving thing…I don’t want to bore you with my stories, but suffice to say…momcat is going to keep those kittens where SHE wants them. So keep her indoors and put “inviting” places around for her to move them to…so she won’t take it into her head to move them into your closet on top of your shoes. (Laundry basket with old soft towels in the bottom…that sort of thing) Because trust me, if that is where she wants them, no matter how many times you move them away, she will move them back. If you want to hear how I know this, email me…and I’ll tell you about my first momcat, who chose to keep her kittens on the other side of my double bed, between the sheets. She also chose to HAVE them there, and I did figure out a way to deal with this…but the first time was a bit-shall we say-disconcerting?

PICTURES!

Our cats have always been fixed, so I’ve never had a litter of kittens around, but it sure does sound fun. I love kittens.

Congratulations! Fuzzerheads are always a great thing!

Give KP and the little babies my best. I’m chuckling to myself replaying old mental kitten movies in my head.

Definitely handle them a lot. I made the mistake of leaving the mom and her kittens alone for a while, thinking that would be less stressful on the mom, but it made for very skittish cats when they grew up.

What’s really neat is that they will use the litter box almost as soon as they can walk.

Oh, and make sure they don’t fall into the water bowl. That happened to one of mine, heehee.

Unfortunately, I had a cat that got it in her head to give birth in the middle of the night in my hair, and in the days afterward kept trying to move the five kitttens into my hair.

Well? How many kittens? How are they and Mom doing?

Where are the pictures?!? Don’t be selfish. Besides, they don’t stay so tiny for long at all, so you’ll need pics for yourself.

Scotticher

Yeah, but I bet it was worth it. I told my daughter about the “wave of kittens”, and she wishes that she could see that, too.

Congrats, B.Pants and KittenPants! I just love little fuzzy kittens! I have a cat thats 19 years old, but she’s never had kittens, so there hasn’t been a kitten around here for quite a while. I’d love to see pictures if you find the time to take some!

I was finally able to sex the kittens today, and the black and white little girl opened her eyes. Her name is Stoppity the Insane and the striped little boy is named Wonko the Sane. They’re so perfect!

Welcome to the wonderful world of grandparentkittenhood!

You are showing excellent form, my dear.

You’re going to keep them, AREN’T you…I can tell…

Oh, I’m keeping Wonko the Sane, but Stoppity the Insane is promised to a friend. Luckily, I’ll be able to visit her regularly, so it’s great. I can’t wait until my little boy can move in with me (he and mommy live at the SO’s place). What a fabulous birthday present!

Happy days!!!
