Okay so I am using the World’s Best Kitty litter (and it is way better than other brands) but the problem is that my cat likes to pee at the edge of the litter.
This means that there is a huge amount of liquid there and it never dries enough to clump properly.
Anyone else run into this? If so, what did you do?
My cat does this if the box hasn’t been cleaned frequently enough for her liking.
However it still clumps up pretty good except right up against the box. Are you putting in enough kitty litter?
I could envision putting some sort of barrier in the box to force your cat to pee away from the edges. However that might make scooping even more difficult.
I find that it will eventually clump when along the edges, it’s just that it takes a bit longer. And if the clump sticks to the side, the best way to get it off cleanly is to slightly tilt the whole box and give it one good whack on the outside of the box where the clump is. You want to tilt the box just enough and whack the outside just enough to get it to come loose in one piece. It takes a bit of practice, but you should get the hang of it.
This is how I deal with it, since one cat pees in the exact same spot on the edge 90% of the time. The other cat varies her places, so that forms the nice little clumps. If it gets to be a huge spot and I’m in a hurry and can’t scoop right then, I just pour more fresh litter on top, sometimes after whacking it away from the edge and into smaller wet clumps. Then when I do have time to scoop it has absorbed more.
Even the unscented keeps the smell down better. And it clumps much better (yet I still have problems <sigh>).
I solved the problem with all of your assistance, btw. If I tilt the litter away from the side she pees on, the dry litter slides to the other side. Then I use a scoop with no holes to get out all the peed on litter.
If she is using the edge as a perch, maybe a stick (make sure it won’t roll - that really would put her off (pun intended)) across the center of the large one?
Of course, you can go high-tech with motion detectors and infrared cameras.
Has she exhibited interest in the toilet and how people pee is disposed? It is possible to train cats to hover while perched on the seat - if she is already perching, maybe placing her on the seat immediately after demonstrating it’s use might work?
DO NOT FLUSH while she is in the room (or at least check out her reaction to the flush).
Mine is fascinated by the automatic nature of the device, but runs from the room in fright upo flushing.
She is very interested in the toilet. But that’s because I never close the door and she gets excited any time I sit down (because obviously, I have done so to pet her).
